Colombia Job Listings
Your friends and relatives may very well express horror and shock when you give them the news that you are planning to teach EFL or ESL in Colombia. Fear not though, you can assure them that the 1980s are long gone and Colombia is as safe a place as any to pursue your ESL career – with the cities being no more dangerous than any large city in North America. Of course, you still have to exercise some caution – don’t do anything that you would not do at home and you should be fine.
Now as to the task of finding a job – the most lucrative full-time opportunities are to be found at private international academic institutions. Typically, most of these institutions require that you have a least two years’ teaching experience. The majority of teaching contracts in Colombia are two years in duration and benefits may include accommodation or an accommodation allowance, as well as airfare – usually in the form of an end-of-contract bonus, medical insurance and paid vacation time. Salaries at these schools are in the range of $1000 to $1400 per month, and while that may not seem like a lot of money, it does provide for a very comfortable lifestyle. A decent, one-bedroom apartment can be rented for as little as $400 in Bogota, while rooms in private homes are available for much less.
ESL or EFL jobs can also be found in smaller, privately run academies or, if you are the entrepreneurial type, you just might be able to secure employment as an in-house ESL or EFL instructor at one of the businesses in one of the larger metropolitan areas, such as Bogota.
Most would-be teachers arrive in Colombia with a tourist visa and start searching for a job. Many will continue to teach on a tourist visa, doing periodic “visa runs” to nearby countries in order to renew their tourist visas. Legally, however, you are required to obtain a work visa after you have secured a job – your employer should be able to help you with this.
It may seem more than a little cavalier to arrive in Colombia without a job, but if you are qualified, experienced and willing to do some door knocking, you should not have a problem. While a TEFL, ESL or EFL qualification is not a strict prerequisite for a job, it will make your quest for gainful employment a lot easier if you earn a certification before making the journey to Colombia. The better private intuitions do require it as a condition of employment, so for the sake of a little time investment on your part, you can tip the odds in your favour and find yourself a well-paid job.
Colombia offers a wide array of natural resources for you to explore and enjoy, combined with city nightlife that rivals anything back home, not to mention some of the friendliest, warmest people you are every likely to encounter anywhere you may choose to travel.
