English has long been spoken in Egypt and with the onset of the global economy the demand for ESL and EFL teachers has only grown.
Teaching positions are available at public and private international schools, universities, as well as commercial language academies in the larger urban centres such as Cairo and Alexandria, where you can find commercial schools scattered throughout the cities on the main streets, side streets and even down the back alleys. With in excess of 100 language institutes and private schools in Egypt, English is big business in this cradle of civilization.
All that said, do not expect to find a job while you are still comfortably ensconced in your home country; you will stand a far better chance if you are on the ground in Egypt and actively searching and interviewing with prospective employers. This is a general guideline and by no means a hard-and-fast rule. Exceptions are made for those whose education, experience and qualifications are highly sought, particularly in the top-tier universities and government-sponsored schools. In these rare cases the employer may conduct online or telephone interviews, finalising paperwork through email and the postal service.
Salaries are dependent on the school at which you are teaching, and vary widely, with the average between USD $600 and $1200 per month. Average costs also vary and, depending on your lifestyle, you can expect to spend between USD $500 and $1000 a month. A bachelor’s degree and TEFL certificate are the bare minimum requirements, although it should be said at this point that some of the commercial language academies may not be as choosy when it comes to deciding to hire a native English-speaking teacher with little international experience. You can expect to spend 20 to 25 hours a week in the classroom – this does not include preparation time, which should run about the same – that is, one hour of prep time for one hour of class time – especially at the university and business levels.
For the most part, you are on your own as far as airfare and accommodation go, although each situation is different – if you’re a well-seasoned, well-educated teaching professional, you may be able to negotiate airfare and accommodation assistance – but do not count on it. Bring enough money with you to tide you over for at least two months – it may be a while until you see your first payday, so come prepared.
Some teachers supplement their salary by taking on private students – teaching them in their homes, cafes, restaurants – anywhere they can converse. These are more of a conversation skills type of class as opposed to a formal class. A lot of business professionals, feeling the pressure to improve their English skills, will sign up with a native-speaking teacher solely for the opportunity to practise their English conversation skills on a regular basis.
