Georgia Job Listings
Recent Georgian government efforts to upgrade the English level being taught in this beautiful, natural-resource-rich country have resulted in a demand for TEFL and ESL teachers throughout this jewel on the Black Sea – both for seasoned teachers and those new to the ESL world. All of this combines to make Georgia a fascinating place to jump-start your career.
Generally speaking, there are two distinct types of TEFL jobs in Georgia – paid and volunteer, with the volunteer jobs being the choice of many first-time teachers looking to add some international teaching experience to their CVs.
The pay is low by Western standards for both types, but then again, so is the cost of living in Georgia. It should be noted that, as in most of Europe, the preference is for EU citizens, but there are still numerous opportunities for non-EU citizens in the volunteer programmes – most of which do provide airfares, lodging with a host Georgian family for a very nominal fee and a monthly stipend of USD $300– which is close to the average Georgian paycheque of $400.
Should you be teaching ESL or EFL at a language centre, you can expect a salary ranging between USD $500 and $800 per month. Working hours vary for both volunteer and paid positions, but most run 5 days a week and you can expect to work 24 to 30 hours a week, including class preparation time.
For those with the necessary qualifications, you may be able to secure a TEFL or ESL position with a university or international school, where the salary will run upwards from $2500 per month. Typical working hours for these jobs are 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday, with the occasional bit of weekend work also required. Minimum requirements for all jobs typically include a degree and a TEFL certificate.
It is expected that as Georgia’s reputation as a safe place to work and live in Eastern Europe grows, so too will the salaries, as employers start to increase recruiting efforts. A note here – should you decide to go the volunteer route, do your due diligence before committing to a programme as there are disreputable operators out there, and it would be worth your while to check them out.
On the downside, good teaching resources are few and far between, and students can tend to be quite unmotivated by all reports. Whether the motivation issue is due to the lack of resources, bad experience with previous TEFL or ESL teachers, or something else altogether is a matter for speculation. Do your best to keep them engaged. No matter the level of the students’ motivation, ESL teachers are expected to be professional, positive, well prepared, well presented and punctual. And let’s not forget flexible – always a good quality in an ESL teacher. Try to engage in extracurricular activities, a very worthwhile endeavour which will endear you to your students and their families. Not to mention it can be a lot of fun.
