Greece Job Listings
Sharing similarities with other Mediterranean countries such as Spain and Italy, Greece also has its own unique aspects to consider when thinking about searching for or accepting a teaching position within this ancient country.
Like both Spain and Italy, TEFL jobs in Greece are a relatively new idea within this historic and scenic country. Levels of English in Greece are therefore relatively low compared to Northern European or Asian locations. Prior to the economic crisis of 2008 this had led to a sharp increase in private English academies and a subsequently heightened need for well-trained TEFL teachers.
Unfortunately, the effects of the crisis were severe enough to curb this increase, and unemployment has seen disposable incomes reduced sufficiently to mean a decrease in the numbers of students attending private academies.
However, at the same time, there has been a new importance placed upon teaching the language within state schools, many of which are now seeking qualified ESL teaching assistants to support or take the place of local teachers for several lessons each week. There has also been a significant rise in students wishing to take Cambridge-based exams, so ESL teachers with experience of the IELTS, FCE or CAE, or those having taken TEFL courses of 160 hours, are highly sought after. As well as these, familiar exams you may be expected to teach include the national English exam Kratiko, so a knowledge of its syllabus may be a benefit.
For teachers with an interest in teaching business English, many academies are keen to hire those willing to work in-company, an exciting and transferable work experience which could see them teaching in new and interesting environments.
Salaries vary depending on location, yet it must be noted that they are relatively low in comparison to other European countries, with teachers often choosing to subsidise their earnings with private lessons. Working environments are generally of a high and comfortable standard, with modern resources being available in many, and well-known textbooks and materials being common.
As for the bureaucracy involved in securing a position, for Europeans it seems relatively easy, with only proof of your degree and TEFL qualification being needed. The academy or school is then required to apply to the Ministry of Education for a teaching licence. These licences, although required by law, may at times not arrive with much speed. However, it seems to be the norm for academies to proceed with the hiring of a teacher if the licence is currently being processed.
The academic year begins in September and concludes in June. Due to the lower number of TEFL jobs in Greece it is advisable to apply early, highlight your strengths and make it clear that you are a serious teacher with knowledge of exam preparation techniques.
Apart from these slight particularities, TEFL jobs in Greece can offer a highly attractive opportunity for those willing to live off a modest salary while enjoying the country’s relaxing environment, beautiful locations and undeniable cultural importance.
