Haiti Job Listings
When we consider the unfortunate disasters which have plagued Haiti in recent years, it is unsurprising to learn that the majority of teaching positions available in this exotic location are of a voluntary nature.
For a teacher looking for a rewarding location where they can use their TEFL skills to benefit others, there can be few more ideal choices than Haiti. The recent natural disasters mean that this beautiful country is undergoing a redevelopment impacting upon all fields of its resources, English language learning included. A wealth of voluntary organisations are in place and desperately seeking TEFL teachers who are willing to work for little or no money in order to increase the population’s level of English. These organisations, though lacking in resources, are normally well run and organised, offering support and advice for all who contribute. The atmosphere of such a position can therefore be a very positive one, with hugely enthusiastic students creating a memorable teaching experience.
Those paid teachers which may be found will be within local schools, many of which will be locally run missions. Though also found in more rural areas, the majority of these are located within the busy and bustling cities of Port-Au-Prince, Carrefour, Petionville and Delmas. Salaries in such schools may not be high, but will provide a relatively comfortable standard of living which will allow you to explore this picturesque country and its unique culture. Unfortunately, it may not be very easy to subsidise your pay with private lessons as there is a shortage of disposable income. Also, it should be mentioned that even within these schools you must be prepared to teach large numbers of students with very little in the way of resources or materials.
In terms of necessary qualifications, this depends on the type of teaching position you are interested in. The few academies or international schools will certainly require a degree, strong TEFL qualifications and probably proof of experience in a classroom environment. Local schools may require the same, though if you can find work as a teaching assistant, then prior experience and even a degree may not be a must. The voluntary organisations will ask for less, though candidates with a TEFL qualification and knowledge of working with little in the way of resources would be a plus.
Accommodation should certainly be looked into prior to making a move. Certainly the best possibility would be to ask your school, academy or voluntary group to mediate in finding you somewhere comfortable and within budget. Living costs are not high in Haiti, though you will probably not be able to save a great deal even if you are able to find a paid position.
As for the bureaucracy, a visa can easily be obtained, and most schools or academies will assist in this process.
In summary, there are certainly a few additional character traits which may be essential for a teacher who is interested in moving to Haiti. For an adventurous, open-minded and resourceful person, this could certainly be the right place for a teaching experience like no other.
