Honduras Job Listings
When considering TEFL jobs in Honduras the attractions are obvious: the Caribbean climate, vast expanses of picturesque scenery and the historic culture which echoes the Mayan legacy. It is a combination which could tempt even the most cautious of travellers. There are, however, some factors which a TEFL teacher should consider before making the move to this tropical location.
Honduras is an extremely poor country and therefore beset by the many problems this poverty induces. Crime rates are high in certain areas, while even the more prosperous locations do not offer many schools with anything but essential teaching facilities and resources.
Indeed, due to these conditions, TEFL jobs in Honduras are very often found in the form of voluntary placements, as even though ESL teaching is highly valued, the government is unable to fund courses, and there are a relatively low number of private academies. The voluntary jobs which are available, however, often come with accommodation, support from experienced volunteers and the reward of teaching enthusiastic and extremely appreciative underprivileged students. These voluntary jobs do not require a degree and are very keen to accept resourceful and adventurous teachers with a TEFL qualification.
Other TEFL jobs in Honduras may be located within the capital Tegucigalpa, or the large city of San Pedro Sula. Such academies may offer a liveable salary and may even assist in the finding or funding of accommodation. It should be noted that for your application to be accepted you must possess both an EFL qualification and a degree. You can expect these academies to be comfortable and adequately run, though at times lacking in resources. A teacher with experience of teaching ESL with little in the way of material would therefore be highly valued, as would anyone seeking to put their EFL qualification to the test in a rewarding classroom environment.
