New Zealand Job Listings
Long known as a land for adventurers and rugby lovers, New Zealand is a country that offers an amazing amount of variety packed into its small area. The filming of The Lord of the Rings in its hills and mountains at the turn of the century helped further advertise New Zealand’s phenomenal scenery to the entire world, and enhanced its growing reputation as a destination for English learners as well as teachers.
Blessed with an ideal climate and breathtaking natural beauty, it is no wonder that it is fast becoming an EFL hot spot to rival many of the more established countries. TEFL teachers here can enjoy lessons with students who are keen to learn, whilst also never being short of something to do on a day off. On North Island you can experience volcanoes and sandy beaches. In contrast, South Island provides you with snowy mountains surrounded by the beauty of glaciers and fjords. It is not just in the landscape that there is a great deal of variety, though, New Zealand also has a varied history and culture, managing to embrace what both the Maori and European descendants living here bring to the table.
A stay in New Zealand would not be complete without experiencing the song and dance of the Maoris, a Maori feast or having your body vibrate with the power of the fabled ‘haka’ witnessed up close and personal. New Zealand’s popularity with holders of TEFL certificates should come as no surprise. The things that make it a hot spot for English learners and backpackers from around the globe are the same things which are attractive to EFL teachers. The landscapes found in New Zealand are truly spectacular and dramatic, even more so in real life than on a TV screen or in a travel brochure.
You can spend many a weekend appreciating the forests, wildlife and landscapes, whether by land, air or river. There are few places in the world comparable to New Zealand for those who want to enjoy mountain bike trails, bungee jumping, white water rafting, hand-gliding and almost any other adventure sport under the sun. Enjoy a nice glass of wine, one of the many excellent craft beers found all over the country or head to the beach and enjoy some world-class surfing. It is truly a country that provides something for everyone.
Most TEFL jobs can be found in Auckland and Christchurch, especially during the summer months when English camps are overflowing with students from South East Asian countries. It can be quite difficult to find a year-round job, however, with plenty of native English teachers on hand to stand at the front of the queue for those sought-after opportunities.
If you are looking to work in New Zealand as an EFL/ESL teacher, then gaining experience first is highly recommended. TEFL jobs are highly competitive and New Zealand has a reputation for high-quality education. When you do find work you can expect to receive a healthy salary that will afford you a comfortable standard of living.
