Feel the sand beneath your toes as you step onto one of the fantastic beaches. Bask in the warmth of the idyllic tropical climate. Walk in a state of wonder through the jaw-dropping volcanic landscapes. Nicaragua can lay claim to being the last undiscovered gem of Central America. Whereas other countries in the region, such as Panama or Costa Rica, are overflowing with tourists and retirees from the USA, Nicaragua remains a relative unknown.
Regarded as probably the safest country in the area too, getting a TEFL job in Nicaragua might feel like you have almost landed in a dream. The greatest thing about it is that despite wonderful weather and the growing demand for native speakers, it has yet to register on the radar of most TEFL teachers looking for work abroad. The largest country in Central America, blessed with numerous areas of outstanding natural beauty, and with Pacific and Caribbean coastlines, Nicaragua has a lot going for it for both tourists and teachers going there to live.
When you are not at work, be sure to experience the spirit of the people and country in its full glory at a local fiesta – there seems to be one somewhere every day. Depending on the festival you witness, you can expect music, dance, crazy competitions such as the race of the masked Judases, bull riding and much more. Those interested in trekking and nature can travel to explore the flora and fauna on the country’s tallest volcano, San Cristóbal, as well as soaking up the landscapes and wildlife of the whole region around it.
A local guide can really bring what is already a beautiful hike to life with stories of local folklore and legend. If you want to make the most of the great climate whilst you are there, you can let your hair down any day you want and head to the beach for some world-class surfing. Snorkelling in the blue waters of the Caribbean Sea is another must. English is becoming an increasingly important skill in economic terms for the people of Nicaragua, helping to boost the EFL market there. Native speakers with a good TEFL qualification are still a rarity in Nicaragua and should mean that you are highly in demand.
There are plenty of opportunities for classes for both adults and children. Most language schools in the country hire face to face, so you can arrive on a tourist visa to find work, which is then easily renewed by a visit to Costa Rica. Look to the big cities such as Leon, Granada, Managua and San Juan del Sur as the best places to find EFL jobs.
Although wages are modest, the low cost of living will mean that you are still able to enjoy a great lifestyle whilst you are there. Students are typically very friendly, although in the finest of Latin traditions you shouldn’t arrive to class expecting them to be on time, or even to show up in many cases.
