Slovakia is a nature lover’s paradise, home to everything from snow-capped mountain ranges and vibrant national parks, to ancient forests and even natural caves.As such, hiking, skiing and other outdoor pursuits are popular pastimes and an excellent reason to look for TEFL jobs in Slovakia.
Although a relatively young country in terms of its independence, gained in 1993, Slovakia has plenty of history for visitors to explore.Castles, wooden churches and fortresses are commonplace, as are charming villages offering a European experience without the excessive tourism of the more well-known surrounding countries.This lack of tourism offers the opportunity for visitors, including those taking TEFL jobs in Slovakia, to immerse themselves in the culture and live as the locals do.
The capital of Bratislava, although not large by European standards, is home to plenty of museums, galleries and performing arts venues and is conveniently linked by train to other parts of the country.The national cuisine is strongly influenced by neighbouring countries, with breaded meats, stews and goulashes served with potatoes commonplace in restaurants and at home.Slovakian food can be quite heavy, suited to the very low winter temperatures, and preserving and pickling techniques are often used.
Although very cold in the winter months, Slovakia experiences a pleasant summer with temperatures averaging around 25 degrees Celsius, perfect for outdoor pursuits between ESL classes and on days off.
As a lesser-known European country there are generally plenty of TEFL jobs in Slovakia, although there can be large variation between salaries and working conditions.For EU nationals, a TEFL qualification and university degree are sufficient for the majority of ESL/EFL jobs.
Private language schools offersome TEFL jobs in Slovakia, with many institutes sending ESL teachers into businesses, rather than working at an academy.In general these schools have a reputation for offering relatively low wages and many ESL teachers may work at more than one academy at once or else supplement their income giving private ESL classes.
TEFL jobs in Slovakia offer salaries in the range of £350–£700 per month, however the cost of living is relatively high, so it can be difficult to save money for travel.Most ESL teachers will have to flat-share in order to make ends meet, as accommodation, particularly in Bratislava, can be expensive.
Some TEFL jobs in Slovakia may also be available in government schools, which are said to pay even less than academies, however are likely to give the ESL teacher more opportunity for cultural experiences and spending time in rural areas as opposed to the main cities.International schools and universities may offer better wages for ESL teachers, but jobs are usually limited to those with a formal teaching qualification.
In private language schools, weekend and evening work is the norm, whilst school and university ESL positions are likely to be weekdays only, from 8am until about 4pm.It is expected that most ESL teachers will have 25 to 30 hours of classes per week, in addition to preparation time.When extra private classes are factored in, however, many may work substantially more than this.
Teaching English in Slovakia is not likely to be hugely financially rewarding, however the culture, natural beauty and lack of tourism still make it an attractive location for many ESL teachers.
