Working as an online freelance ESL teacher

After having completed several years of ESL teaching, you may be interested in working as an online freelance ESL teacher. This article will give you some basic information about how to go about getting set up online.

Your ESL work would be similar to your classroom work, but you could also be hired for proofreading, writing ESL related articles, and tuition. Your listening/speaking work is done by using free videos services such as Skype http://www.skype.com/en/ and Google Hangouts https://www.google.com/+/learnmore/hangouts/. There are two main ways of getting set up online: you can become a freelance member of one of the online freelance job sites, or you can get hosted by one of the online web hosting companies.

As a freelance ESL teacher, becoming a member of an online freelance job site is definitely the best option for most teachers; here are three of these sites: http://www.peopleperhour.com/ https://www.elance.com/q/find-work http://www.freelancer.co.uk/ Once you join, the first thing that you will have to do is to create a profile of yourself, and a portfolio of your work: on your page.

The next step is to look for ESL work: this is done without having to leave the site – because clients post their jobs on the site. Once you see an ESL job that you like, you submit a proposal that is sent to the client; if the client likes your proposal and is happy with your profile and portfolio, you will be awarded the job. There’s only one catch: you will be in competition with other freelancers who have also sent their proposals.

There are several advantages of joining a freelance job site: you don’t need to worry about advertising yourself; you can build up a good reputation as an ESL teacher; clients come to the site; and most important of all: you need never worry about not getting paid because fees are held in escrow. Furthermore, you can be a member of more than one freelance job site. If you are one of those people who like to have their own ‘independent’ ESL sites, you should consider using an online web hosting company.

Three of the more well-known ones are as follows: http://www.ipage.com/web-hosting; http://website.1and1.co.uk/#top; http://web.com/default2.aspx. Some sites will host you for free: http://www.weebly.com/. For a relatively small fee, they will host your site, which you build on their site using drag and drop technology. Unfortunately, advertising costs, low client numbers, and the relative lack of payment guarantees are three problem areas associated with these sites so far as educational services are concerned. Whether you work online full-time or you combine it with your ESL teaching job: it is a rewarding and relaxing job that can be done from the comfort of your home.
