Course options explained

With so much choice and such a vast amount of conflicting information available on the Internet, it can be difficult for potential TEFL course students to make the correct choice. The Level 5 version of our TEFL course is a more in-depth overview of TEFL and is a good choice if you wish to gain formal teaching jobs, which usually include accommodation, flight reimbursements and help in gaining a work visa. Upon completion, you will be awarded an internationally recognised Level 5 TEFL Diploma (168 hours), which is regulated by Ofqual (UK government) and DEAC-Approved (US Department of Education National Accreditor).

A regulated Level 5 qualification means that Ofqual (UK government) has approved the qualification to be at a recognised level of achievement. Our Level 5 TEFL Diploma (168hrs) is the same level as the following qualifications: a diploma of higher education (DipHE), a foundation degree and the CELTA and Trinity CertTESOL qualifications.

We also offer a Level 3 version of our course, which is an introduction to TEFL and is perfect for anyone looking for casual work teaching English, such as volunteering, backpacking or finding work “in-country”, and some online teaching roles. It requires less of a time commitment (120 hrs) and is more cost-effective, so it can be a way of fast-tracking into the industry for someone with a short-term teaching plan. The course you should choose depends entirely on your own situation, needs and teaching plans.

All regulated Level 5 TEFL Diplomas are 150hrs+ in length. We have never seen a single employer ask for more than 168hrs of TEFL training.

Brendon Albertson, Senior Trainer

Brendon earned an MS in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Central Connecticut State University, and has been teaching English as a Second Language for 8 years in China, South Korea, Japan, and the United States.

His students have included adult business people, high school and college students, kindergarten and elementary school children, and immigrants living in Boston.  In addition to teaching abroad, Brendon volunteered on organic rice farms in Japan, joined a dance group with security guards in Southern China, and learned to make kimchi in Korea.

Recently, Brendon was the lead teacher at a non-profit organization assisting immigrants with finding employment and college opportunities in the Boston area, and he currently teaches at a private international high school just outside Boston.

Brendon is passionate about teaching students how to learn on their own, and enjoys helping new teachers find their own strengths and teaching style.  He speaks Mandarin Chinese and Japanese, and enjoys learning about how students’ native languages influence their ideas and personality.

His one piece of advice for future EFL teachers is that when you teach a language, you’re not just teaching others knowledge; you’re guiding them in the development of a skill.  Brendon would like to encourage everyone to try teaching EFL abroad, as you can learn so much at the same time!

Accreditation FAQ

The simple answer is, we just don't know! Recruiters offering the best opportunities with the most competitive packages are now asking for level 5 TEFL qualifications. All regulated level 5 courses are 150hrs+ in length. We have never seen a single employer ask for more than 168hrs of TEFL training.

A Level 5 TEFL Diploma is the gold standard of TEFL qualifications, therefore we only offer this option for our level 5 students.

We know that navigating your way through the TEFL web of courses is very confusing. This is why we try to keep it simple, giving you exactly what you need to get the best jobs around the world!

The Level 3 and Level 5 versions of our TEFL course are regulated by Ofqual (UK government department) and awarded by Qualifi, a UK government-recognised awarding body. Our Level 5 TEFL Course is DEAC-approved as meeting the criteria for Approved Quality Curriculum (AQC) status. The DEAC is a U.S. Department of Education National Accreditor.

The TEFL Academy is fully accredited by Qualifi an Ofqual (The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation, a UK government department) regulated awarding body. Qualifi have robust quality assurance systems and procedures in place which all course providers must successfully pass in order to be accredited under the scheme.

Potential TEFL course students should remember that their prospective employers are likely to be based outside the USA. This means that accreditation bodies based solely in the USA may not be recognised by employers abroad. This is why The TEFL Academy has chosen Qualifi, as they offer international accreditation for training course providers.

You can find out more about Qualifi on their website: https://qualifi.net

The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) regulates qualifications, examinations and assessments in England and vocational qualifications in Northern Ireland.

Ofqual is a non-ministerial UK government department.

You can verify our qualifications on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications:

Level 3 here,
Level 5 here.

Ofqual recognise Awarding Organisations like Qualifi and regulate qualifications like ours. An Ofqual regulated TEFL qualification will be recognised worldwide and is highly respected by employers.

The Distance Education Accrediting Commission was founded in 1926 and is a U.S. Department of Education National Accreditor. DEAC's goal is to ensure a high standard of educational quality in the distance education institutions it approves by requiring compliance with its published standards, policies and procedures.

Our Level 5 TEFL Course is DEAC-approved as meeting the criteria for Approved Quality Curriculum (AQC) status.

You can find out more about the DEAC on their website: https://www.deac.org/

When you hear about “levels” this refers to the UK government’s framework for qualifications. This framework allows learners studying UK government regulated qualifications to understand where their qualification sits in comparison to other qualifications. A regulated level 5 qualification means that Ofqual (UK government), have approved the qualification to be at a recognised level of achievement. Our Level 5 TEFL Diploma (168hrs) is the same level as the following qualifications: a diploma of higher education (DipHE), a foundation degree and the CELTA and Trinity CertTESOL qualifications.

A TEFL Diploma is simply a slightly higher level of qualification than a "Certificate". It will help your CV/Resume stand out against other applicants for TEFL jobs. Our Diploma is the highest Level 5 Diploma available, so courses advertised as an "Advanced Diploma" are equal to our qualification.

A regulated qualification means that it is officially recognised by government and sits on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications.

You can verify our qualifications on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications:

Level 3 here,
Level 5 here.

Choosing to study a regulated qualification is your guarantee of quality. Course providers offering regulated qualifications must comply with very tough quality assurance rules and procedures. This ensures that:

  • The staff delivering and assisting students are suitably qualified
  • The course provider has the resources to effectively deliver the qualification
  • The course itself effectively teaches and assesses the qualifications aims
  • The contents of the course have been written and designed by industry professionals and peer reviewed
  • The feedback and grades given to learners is fair, moderated and meets modern academic standards
  • Officially regulated by the UK government, therefore the qualification will be internationally recognised by schools, employers, foreign embassies and governments of most other countries.

Any qualification that is officially recognised by the UK government will sit on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications. Make sure to ask your course provider to provide a link to the register for their qualification.

You can verify our qualifications on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications:

Level 3 here,
Level 5 here.

You may see cheap TEFL courses advertised online that claim to be a “level”, such as “Level 5 140-Hour TEFL Course” (often advertised on daily deal websites), unfortunately these courses are not the level they claim to be and are highly misleading.

The level of a course tells learners where the qualification sits on the UK’s Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF).  If a course is not listed on the Register of Regulated Qualifications, then it is not really a level at all. You can find our qualification on the register here.

Make sure you ask any TEFL training provider that claims to be offering a “level” of TEFL course to provide a link to the Register of Regulated Qualifications. If they cannot provide this, then the qualification is not the level they claim it to be and will not be accepted by foreign embassies and employers.

TEFL and TESOL are both acronyms for teaching English to non-native English speakers. Both acronyms can be used to describe qualifications which certify you to teach English as a foreign language. To a large extent, "TEFL" and "TESOL" are used interchangeably.

  • TEFL - Teaching English as a Foreign Language
  • TESOL - Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

This could be yours!

  • Q. How satisfied were you with the classroom element of the course? A. My facilitator was Wikus. He not only facilitated on the English language but also gave us tips and tools for being a teacher and living abroad. He gave us scenario based examples and we had to come up with solutions thereon. The classroom sessions were not only interactive but were coaching sessions too. And indirectly, the experience also made me reflect on how I can improve in my current job (I'm a facilitator in my workplace :-)). I loved the exercises he used for transferring knowledge, the group work which made me learn from other individuals and the warmers which put me on my toes (in a good way). Monday morning, the first thing I did was to share this experience with my colleague and he was taken by it and also wants to do the course. I am enabled and equipped only by the classroom sessions thus far. :-)

  • Q. How satisfied were you with the classroom element of the course? A. We covered a lot of different areas that would come in very useful when teaching English abroad. There was a great focus on the understanding of the grammar side of English which was very knew to me. I feel like I came out of the lessons with more confidence in teaching English grammar. We covered lesson plans in great detail and it was interesting hearing all the other students ideas, and the teachers advice on it. Finally, our teacher Louise answered any and all our questions on all things TEFL, giving us some great advice and resources that would benefit us when looking for a job with TEFL, and whilst working as a TEFL teacher.
  • Q. How satisfied were you with your TEFL Tutor? A. Louise was very friendly and clearly very used to/confident as a teacher. She was always answering any questions we asked and giving us plenty of tips which may have not occurred to us. I learned a lot from watching her teach the class, and saw how she used a variety of different teaching techniques.

  • Q. How satisfied were you with your TEFL Tutor? A. Our teacher Emma was absolutely fantastic. She got everyone involved and always brought a fun element to it, which I personally felt made me concentrate harder and was more eager to learn. She went through things in depth at a level we all could relate to. On top of all that she was just such a lovely and passionate lady all round and really shaped my view on TEFL.
