Thailand has long been a popular holiday and travel destination, and in recent years it has become increasingly popular with English teachers. The great thing about teaching in Thailand is how simple it is to find a job, they are used to foreigners, or as they are locally known ‘farang’, and it’s also a great place for meeting fun, interesting like minded people. Oh, and lets not forget the amazing food, stunning scenery and friendly people.
Despite some recent political turbulence, Thailand is still an incredibly safe place to work as an English teacher. Before getting a job in Thailand, you need to make the big move, nowhere in Thailand will hire you over the internet, but don’t let this deter you, jobs are abundant and the Thai’s make the process easy. You’ll first enter Thailand on a tourist visa while you’re looking for work; just make sure that you have acquired a working visa by the time you start your job. Your school will generally help you with all the paperwork, though a visit to an embassy outside the country is required; most people visit Laos as it’s the closest international consulate.
Looking for work is easy in Thailand, and if you have a degree and a TEFL certification, you’re certain to land work within a reasonable time frame. Approaching the schools and language centres directly is the best way to go about it. There are agencies which advertise on the internet, some are legitimate but do be wary as some people have been known to get ripped off by third parties.
Thailand offers more than just a job for people who want to teach English. The country has an eclectic landscape, ranging from stunning white beaches to sprawling rainforest. In your generous holiday allowance there are plenty of places to travel within the country; internal buses, trains and even flights tend to be very reasonable. The food in Thailand is some of the best in the world. Apartments tend not to have kitchens, unless you rent a pricey western style one, but why would you want to cook when you can have a gastronomic feast for the price of a loaf of bread?
