DescriptionAs Timor-Leste prepares for full Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) membership status, English language has become increasingly important to the country's development and the demand for LELI to provide high quality English language training has never been higher.
LELI is looking for TEFL professionals to fill a variety of teaching roles that all differ slightly depending on the programme and/or clients needs. All teachers at LELI are expected to be available to work full-time from Monday to Friday and depending on the programme, teachers may have early morning (07:15) starts and/or evening (20:00) finishes.
Successful applicants will be expected to teach 20-24 hours per week in addition to completing basic administrative tasks and must be capable of planning and preparing contextually appropriate lessons. Most courses are delivered at our training centre, but some clients prefer lessons at their workplace, and two of the programmes we currently manage involve working at offsite locations.
Successful applicants will be expected to adapt and tailor lessons and/or materials to suit specific client and/or student needs and be capable of teaching across a range of courses including General English, English for the Workplace, Exam Preparation and English for Specific Purposes. On occasion, there will be opportunities to provide one-to-one tuition to high-profile individuals.
The majority of our students are working adults and have a low to moderate level of English (typically CEF A1-B1). Currently, we deliver English language courses and programmes for Government of Timor-Leste officials working within an ASEAN context; Timorese military personnel; immigration and border force agency staff; candidates selected to work overseas on the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme; staff from international humanitarian and development organisations; employees from international companies working in a variety of industry sectors; potential overseas scholarship candidates; and locally employed staff at foreign diplomatic missions including the Australian, New Zealand and American Embassies. Additionally, we teach over 500 students per trimester on our increasingly popular General English public course programme, of which a growing number of students (approximately 30%) are teenagers.
The standard of education in Timor is generally quite poor, rote learning is commonplace and IT literacy is often limited, so the majority of our students need a lot of support with abstract thinking and/or help learning to learn. Therefore, in conjunction with building students English language proficiency, teachers at LELI are expected to help develop students analytical and critical thinking skills, and help to foster autonomous learning practices.
Dili is a small, quiet, unpretentious city and is a very different environment to most South-East Asian cities. The heat and humidity is not to be underestimated, nor is its remote and isolated location, so it's certainly not a place that suits everyone. However, for those with a sense of adventure willing to invest their time and energy, not only is it a beautiful island with stunning landscapes to explore, but it's undoubtedly a land of opportunity and reward, and successful applicants would be helping to make a genuine difference in the development of a nation that is rich in culture and history. -
