How To Research A TEFL Employer

How To Research A TEFL Employer

TEFL employer research is the process of verifying a school’s legal standing, financial stability, and workplace culture before signing a contract. To ensure a safe placement in 2026, teachers should cross-reference independent reviews on platforms like Glassdoor and Go Overseas, verify physical school addresses via digital maps, and request direct contact with current staff.

Thoroughly vetting an employer prevents common job scams and ensures a legally compliant teaching visa.

Researching a potential employer can be difficult if you are looking for a job in a foreign country and aren’t familiar with the employers in the field. But it’s still important.

If you have spent some time doing your research online, and have found a prospective job that you would like to apply for, or if you’ve already gone through the application process and are now considering an offer of employment, it makes sense to do a background check on the employer.

Finding a job in another country can be daunting because it can be a complete unknown and accepting a contract of employment for a year or two based on nothing but an online advert can be very risky.

Here is our quick guide on how to research a TEFL employer to make sure you are making the right decision when it comes to accepting a TEFL contract.

The digital paper trail (where to look)

The first step to researching your employer is the obvious: Google.

Google the TEFL school and find out if they have their own website or if they have been mentioned on any other sites. Looking at a school’s website can provide you with photos of the school and perhaps other staff members, so even if you can’t understand the language you can still find valuable information. On the other hand, if the school doesn’t have a website, this may give you a glimpse of the kind of school it is as well.

Top tip: Check out the address of the employer on Google maps and check out the street view. Does it look like a business or is it a PO Box?

Googling your future employer gives you social proof of the employer. It can bring up any comments regarding the school on forums or blogs, such as on Reddit or Facebook. There are a number of forums and websites for teachers to post about employers that have been disappointing or downright dishonest, as a way of preventing other teachers from finding themselves in the same bad situations. It can be very useful to spend some time looking for such comments in order to find out what the general opinion is on the employer.

The current teacher test

Try to track down current or former employers.

If you can get in touch with someone currently works there or who has worked there before, drop them a message and they will most likely get back to you with a response. The TEFL community is a very connected community and teachers are more than happy to share experiences or advice to other teachers.

If a TEFL employer won’t give you the names or contact details of a current or former teacher, this could be for a very good reason.

Red flags

Unfortunately it must be said that there are some dodgy employers and agents in the TEFL industry. They can be very convincing and persuasive and it’s remarkably easy to be fooled.

The problem is, it’s usually not something as straightforward as people advertising non-existent jobs.

But what can happen is that agents can advertise jobs and not be altogether honest about the conditions. If you are persuaded to sign a contract, you will be bound to that contract even if the situation is not what you were expecting, and you will only realise the truth when you have already arrived.

Red flags you should watch out for:

  • Upfront fees: No legitimate employer will ask you to pay them for visa processing. Fees are always paid to the embassy directly.

  • No video interview: In 2026, an employer hiring you via email only is almost certainly a scam.

  • Vague visa advice: If an employer says, “Just come on a tourist visa and we will fix it later,” it’s highly likely they are asking you to work illegally. Remember, if you are caught working illegally, you are liable.

It’s really important to do some research when considering a TEFL job. Considering how many teachers there are all over the world, if there is anything remotely dodgy about an employer, chances are you will find out about it on the internet. It really is a case of being safe rather than sorry.

The TEFL Employer Legitimacy Checklist (2026)

Use this checklist before signing any international teaching contract. Make sure your TEFL employer satisfies these seven points:

  1. The “No Upfront Fee” rule: Legitimate employers will never ask you to pay them directly for visa processing or flight bookings. Any legal fees are paid to the embassy or service providers.
  2. Official digital presence: Does the school have a website with a registered domain (not just a social media page)? Check that their contact email matches their website domain (e.g., [email protected] vs. [email protected]).
  3. Physical address verification: Search the school’s address on Google Maps. If it shows a PO Box, a residential apartment, or an empty lot, it is likely a ghost school.
  4. Independent reviews: Look for unfiltered feedback on Glassdoor, Reddit (r/TEFL), or online review platforms. Be wary of schools with zero reviews or only “perfect” 5-star ratings that look AI-generated.
  5. The interview process: Did you have a live video or phone interview? In 2026, being hired via email or chat only, without a face-to-face video call, is a major red flag for job fraud.
  6. Current teacher reference: Ask to speak with a current foreign teacher via email or LinkedIn. If the school refuses or makes excuses, they are likely hiding high turnover or poor working conditions.
  7. Legal visa guidance: Does the school insist on a proper Work Visa (e.g., Non-B in Thailand, Z in China)? Any employer asking you to work on a tourist or “business” visa is asking you to break the law.
