The United Arab Emirates has a competitive TEFL teaching job market. Anyone applying for a job teaching English as a foreign language here can expect a good salary of around £2,000 a month tax-free, private healthcare, an apartment or allowance and your airfares reimbursed.

Although the United Arab Emirates has a high standard of living, you can live very comfortably on your earnings and even save money if you want to. Because competition is fierce, you will need a degree to teach English as a foreign language and most educational establishments prefer teachers with some experience.

There are 7 emirates in the country, but teaching is mainly concentrated in:

  • Dubai
  • Abu Dhabi
  • Al Ain
  • Al Gharbia
  • Sharjah

The United Emirates has a large ex-pat community, it is slightly more liberal than other countries in the region, but it must be remembered that it still has strict rules regarding alcohol, clothing and public displays of affection.

The United Arab Emirates – Dubai

Dubai is a vibrant modern city on the southeast coast. It is the largest city in the United Emirates and it’s famous for luxury shopping and sandy beaches. Transport links are excellent and you’re close to other countries like Kuwait and Bahrain which are cheap to visit.

The United Arab Emirates – Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Emirates and the second largest city. It is located on an island in the Persian Gulf just off the country’s mainland. Its main industries are oil and commerce, so you may well be asked to teach English as a foreign language for business here. There are historic sites and beaches to visit in your free time and like Dubai there is an ex-pat community.

The United Arab Emirates – Al Ain

Al Ain is the middle of the country. It is a desert region and Al Ain is an oasis city on the border with Oman. If you prefer the tranquillity of the countryside close by then this is the place for you. Al Ain is one of the Emirates oldest inhabited settlements and is a World Heritage Site.

The United Arab Emirates – Al Gharbia

Al Gharbia is to the west and is close to the famous empty quarter, a great desert area. It has sandy beaches and it is close to Sir Bani Yas Island which is a haven for endangered wildlife. There’s also plenty of historic sites to explore and Al Mirfa beach is very popular with water sports enthusiasts.

The United Arab Emirates – Sharjah

Sharjah is on the southern coast of the United Emirates. It is a more conservative area and drinking alcohol is prohibited here. The city is the administrative and cultural centre of the Emirates. It has a large ex-pat community and English is normally spoken as a second language.

You should now have a good insight into teaching English in the United Arab Emirates.
