TEFL Destinations You’ve Never Considered

Now that you have your TEFL certificate you’re probably dreaming about where you can go. Ok, so you were probably dreaming about where you can go even before you signed up to do your TEFL course but now that you have the certificate you need to make some serious decisions about where you want to be in a few weeks’ or months’ time.

If you’ve done your research, you’ll know that countries like South Korea, Thailand and China are very popular TEFL destinations. They are all beautiful countries where you are pretty much guaranteed to find a TEFL job. You will also earn good money or at least be able to live a very comfortable lifestyle. What’s more, all these countries offer very exciting options for your time off.

But maybe you’re thinking you want to do something a little different, go somewhere a little off-beat. Then you’ve come to the right place! Here we present to you a few of our favourite as-yet-unknown TEFL destinations. You should be familiar with the countries but you’ve probably never thought about teaching TEFL there and we think you should.

Teaching English in Myanmar

You might not recognise the name Myanmar and that’s because you might know this country as Burma. Either way, it’s a beautiful country. Just north of Thailand, Myanmar is full of culture, history and natural wonders. The landscape is breath-taking no matter where you are in the country and the people are warm and friendly too.

You may have heard of its recent (and long-running) political struggles and conflict, but tourists have been welcomed back with open arms for the last few years and TEFL teachers are no different. There are loads of volunteer teaching positions available or, if you’re looking for a salaried post, the private schools are always on the look-out for foreign teachers.

Teaching English in Kazakhstan

If you’ve heard of Borat or seen the movie you may be tempted to cross Kazakhstan off your list of TEFL destinations. Don’t! Kazakhstan is an interesting and mysterious country, just waiting to be discovered. Its neighbours are China and Russia, which might be why it’s so overlooked, but as the largest country in Central Asia, there is no shortage of adventures to be found here.

Probably because it’s a bit out of the way, TEFL positions in Kazakhstan are generally well-paid and your contract will give you numerous benefits, such as airfare, accommodation and an end-of-contract bonus. So even though you may not know what you’re letting yourself in for, at least you know you’ll be well compensated!

Teaching English in The Seychelles

You know Mauritius and Reunion, but what about The Seychelles? A gorgeous tropical paradise that dreams are made of. White sand beaches ü Crystal clear seas üEndless sunshine-y days ü What more could you ask for?

Though it’s an archipelago of 115 different islands, there are three main islands which will offer you TEFL opportunities. Here you’ll find private language schools who can offer you a TEFL position or you can simply find private students who are looking to improve their English.

So when contemplating where your TEFL certificate may take you, don’t just consider the big names. The world is a big place and there are many undiscovered gems out there just waiting for TEFL teachers!
