Frequently Asked Questions

With so much choice and such a vast amount of conflicting information available on the Internet it can be difficult for potential TEFL course students to make the correct choice.

The most internationally recognised TEFL courses lead to a level 5 certificate, which is the same level as the CELTA/Trinity CertTESOL. The minimum standard for most entry-level teaching positions is a 120-Hour TEFL Certificate, however to ensure our students can access the best global opportunities our course leads to a Level 5 TEFL Certificate (168 hours), which is regulated by Ofqual (UK government).

Our all-inclusive TEFL course includes teaching English to young learners which other providers only offer as an additional course after you have gained your TEFL certificate and at an additional cost.

If you feel you would benefit from face-to-face tuition, including the opportunity to practise all you have learnt in the classroom, you should choose a combined 168-hour TEFL course with 20-hours of face-to-face training. If you cannot attend a classroom TEFL course, or perhaps are looking for a more flexible way to get TEFL qualified, you should choose an online-only level 5 TEFL course (168 hours).

The level 5 course is the same level as CELTA and Trinity Cert TESOL
Includes ‘Teaching English to Young Learners’ at no additional fee
The course is Ofqual regulated (UK government)
The course is 168 hours
The course is tutor-supported
6 months’ access to the course

Our Combined Level 5 TEFL Course (168 hours) costs $690 & our Online Level 5 TEFL Course (168 hours) costs $440; this includes all the course materials and tutor support as well as a unit on teaching English to young learners, for which other course providers would charge an additional fee.  Your official TEFL certificate will be posted to you within 2 days of completing the course from TQUK. Our students take an average of 4-6 weeks to complete the course.

If you choose the Online Level 5 TEFL Course (168 hours), then you must pay the full course fee up front. If you choose the Combined Level 5 TEFL Course (168 hours), then you can choose to pay the full course fee up front, or if your course is over two weeks away you can book on a course by paying a $80 deposit. You will need to clear the remaining balance no later than one week before your course date. Access to the online course is provided on receipt of the full balance payment.

You do not need to be a native speaker to study our course, just as long as you are conversationally fluent in English. Roughly 20% of our students are non-native speakers.

You will receive The TEFL Academy Level 5 TEFL Certificate (168 hrs), which is regulated by Ofqual (UK government). The qualification is awarded by Training Qualification UK (TQUK), an Ofqual regulated awarding body.

Our level 5 TEFL certificate qualifies you to teach English as a foreign language internationally, including in the USA. The qualification is at the same level as the CELTA and Trinity CertTESOL courses qualifications.

When you hear about “levels” this refers to the UK government’s framework for qualifications. This framework allows learners studying UK government regulated qualifications to understand where their qualification sits in comparison to other qualifications. Our course is a level 5 qualification, which is the same as a diploma or foundation degree, one step above a-levels, but below a university degree. Our course is the same level as the CELTA/Trinity Cert TESOL qualifications.

Both the Level 5 Combined and Online TEFL Courses (168 hours) are assessed by a mix of short exams and coursework. All eleven units are exam-assessed and for units 5, 10 and 11 there are also coursework-assessed assignments. Please note that in order to pass each test at the end of each unit, you will need to achieve a minimum of 70%.On completion students are awarded Pass, Merit, or Distinction.

Learners must achieve 29 credits from 11 mandatory units.

It is possible to fail exams and coursework. However, it is very rare a learner will fail an assessment activity, as they should be referred first with the opportunity to resubmit and/or be reassessed.  Over 90% of our students pass the course first time. If you fail the course we see this as a problem with our teaching rather than your ability. If you fail the 20-hour classroom training session, on the combined course, we will invite you to retake the course on the next available date at no extra cost. If you fail an exam or any of your coursework on the online course, you can retake the exams and assignments as many times as needed within your 6 month course deadline.

We are fully aware that most of our students have not studied grammar since they were at school as children, as a result grammar is covered in the course. Your grammar skills will be satisfactory to complete the course if you are fluent in English.

All course materials are included in the course fee. You do not need any books or special materials to bring with you to the course.

Peer to peer teaching practice is one of the fundamental aspects of the course.

On average around 20 people will attend each one of our course dates. Please note these are only averages and course numbers do fluctuate.

Disabled access varies from one training facility to another. Please contact us to find out specific information for individual training centres.

You will be qualified to teach children and adults.

Your certificate will be issued, approved, and dispatched within 2 days of the course completion date from TQUK. Our students take an average of 4-6 weeks to complete the course.

You can start applying for jobs in the USA and abroad as soon as you have passed the course. Your TEFL certificate will be issued, approved, and dispatched within 2 days of the course completion date from TQUK.

There are literally hundreds of jobs boards and other resources newly qualified teachers can use to find employment. We will point you in the right direction and assist you in making job applications. All students who complete the full 168-hour course can also apply for jobs on our exclusive jobs board

Potential TEFL course students should remember that their prospective employers are likely to be based outside the country in which they complete their TEFL training. This means that accreditation bodies based locally may not be recognised by employers abroad. This is why TEFL Academy is fully accredited by the World TEFL Accrediting Commission (WTEFLAC). The WTEFLAC is an international body that accredits and regulates TEFL courses.

Your 6-month access to the online course will start as soon as you pay for the course in full. It doesn’t matter how much of the online course you have completed before the weekend training but we recommend completing at least one unit before you attend.

You can contact our team of dedicated tutors through your online course ticket system. They will respond to you within 24 hours via email. If you have any non-academic enquiries, then please contact the team at head office.
