From Tour Guide to Global English Teacher
Since as far back as I can remember, I have always felt somewhat of a force pushing my life towards Asia, but as a young boy I had no idea how to pursue this dream and make it a reality.
Until sometime towards the end of 2017, at the age of 20, I was working a drop dead boring 9 to 5 job as a tour guide
in my home country of South Africa, when my friend planted a seed in my mind about teaching English overseas. I was intrigued and excited about the possibility to potentially achieve my dream. This seed grew quickly and as soon as I got home I did some research, and by some divine intervention I stumbled across The TEFL Academy which ticked all the boxes for what I was looking for in obtaining my TEFL certification. And so started the journey that I now know and love, which is my life and purpose in this world.
After completing my 168 hour level 5 TEFL certificate with The TEFL Academy in August of 2018, with no teaching experience whatsoever, I got in touch with an agent in China and through them, I started applying for English Teaching jobs abroad. After a few interviews (if I remember correctly it was about 5) I finally had an interview with an amazing woman who would later turn out to be my boss. She was the principle and main shareholder of a private International English Academy in a city called Wuxi in
Jaingsu Province, which was very near to Shanghai. About one hours travel by high speed train. This woman and I instantly got along like a house on fire, and shortly after, she sent me my contract and offer of employment to be one of the English teachers at her school.
I remember the emotions that surged in me at the time, because bear in mind that as a 20 year old in South Africa, it was and still is incredibly difficult to find a good paying job without any qualifications, and my salary for teaching at this school was going to be more money than both my parents and I had ever seen as a monthly salary ever before. And so I signed the contract, got my passport and paper work ready, and set off for my new job as an English teacher for an accredited International EnglishAcademy in China.

I am indebted to The TEFL Academy because without them, I would never have gotten this opportunity of a life time which started my adult and working life off on its best possible foot. From September 2018 to September 2019 I worked at this school which gave me the experience I needed to continue and further my career as an English teacher. I now teach English online for 3 different global companies teaching kids from the ages of 2 to 3 years old all the way to the age of 47 (which was the oldest student I have ever taught)
