How to Begin Teaching in Botswana

Enigmatic Landscapes

These jobs are usually well-paid and include end-of-contract bonuses

A landlocked country with a population of just over 2 million people, Botswana is one of Africa’s most stable countries and one of the fastest growing economies in the world. In terms of big cities, Botswana does not have much to offer but you don’t come to Botswana to experience city life. In the south is the capital of Gaborone, which offers museums, diamond mines and nightlife, but that’s about all the country has for city-dwellers.

Instead, come to Botswana to experience the great outdoors like nowhere else. One of the best safari destinations in the world, Botswana boasts the Okavango Delta – a UNESCO World Heritage Site - the Chobe National Park and the Kalahari Desert on its list of must-visit attractions. Botswana can offer you all the animal experiences you could ever dream of. Chobe National Park has one of the largest game concentrations in Africa. It is also a country well known for sightings of lions, zebra, wild dogs, cheetahs, leopards and hyena. You might also get a glimpse of the famous black-maned lions.

As a former British protectorate named Bechuanaland, Botswana gained independence in 1966. Since then, the country has had a continuous tradition of democratic elections, this makes it Africa's oldest democracy.

Teaching Opportunities
The majority of teaching positions in Botswana are volunteer positions, but it is possible to find a job in one of the universities. These jobs are usually well-paid and include end-of-contract bonuses, medical insurance and several weeks of holidays.

Volunteer opportunities are available all year round in Botswana but for positions in schools the main hiring season is November and December for a January start to the academic year. Volunteer positions are flexible on your qualifications but working in a school may require a Bachelor’s degree and working in a university will require a Master’s degree.
