China Job Listings

China offers an experience that will stay with you long after you have left. So much so that it is probable you will still be regaling your friends, colleagues and even total strangers with tales of your adventures long after you have returned to your own country.

Your experience in a TEFL job in China will vary widely, depending on where you choose to teach – a large city or a small city. Or perhaps in a rural area, where they may never have lain eyes on a foreigner. Do not be surprised if the locals are drawn to you as a bit of a curiosity.

The basic requirement for TEFL jobs in China is a bachelor’s degree. Experience and a TEFL certificate are bonuses, as are CELTA or DELTA degrees. A heads-up is in order here – there have been rumors that China will be changing the requirements to include some sort of certification, and this will apply to any TEFL job in China – it will not matter if you are teaching EFL or ESL.

The typical TEFL job in China will require you to teach for up to 25 hours a week (give or take a few hours) at most schools, or as few as 12 hours at university level. These are not hard-and-fast numbers, but should give you an idea of what to expect. Your contract will specify the number of hours that you will be paid for as well as any provision for overtime. Contract hours do not include class prep time.

TEFL jobs in China typically provide you with accommodation and you can expect that it will be outfitted with the basics – fridge, cooker, cooking utensils, dishes, plates, cups and, of course, a wok. While the tap water is not drinkable, it is fine for bathing, washing your dishes and cleaning vegetables. Arrangements can be made to have drinking water delivered to your flat. Most teachers’ accommodation has a washing machine provided, but you will have to hang your clothes to dry.

As far as Internet access goes, it may be provided as part of your contract, but you will more than likely have to make arrangements to have it connected. Your employer can help you with this.

Grocery shopping in China can be a little intimidating for a foreigner, but do not miss the experience of a Chinese supermarket. There are some large Western-style supermarkets operating in China, but these are in the urban areas for the most part. That said, you may want to skip the hassle of cooking altogether and dine out – you will find it just as economical, and a lot more appetising than your own cooking – just ask anyone who has been fortunate enough to have a TEFL job in China. As well, if there are snacks, toiletries or anything of that ilk that you just cannot live without, bring them with you, or make arrangements to have them shipped to by someone from back home.

If you are taking doctor-prescribed medication, you would be well advised to bring a year’s supply with you, as you may find it difficult to find an English-speaking physician or your particular medicine. And don’t forget to visit your dentist before leaving.

Glasses and contact lenses are readily available and much cheaper than you will find at home.
