Mongolia’s vast steppes and deserts are home to age-old traditions and a rugged landscape. About a third of the population is still nomadic. The 13th century saw the height of the Mongol Empire, and Kublai Khan actually conquered China. But for most of the 20th century the country was a satellite of either the Soviet Union or China. It was so cut off from the rest of the world that the phrase ‘Outer Mongolia’ came to embody everything that was remote and isolated. But over the last few years, Mongolia has opened itself up to the world of business and tourism. It’s a destination for nature lovers, with hiking, camping, climbing and horse trekking. You can even help round up sheep while staying with a herdsman’s family in their yurt. The land of Genghis Khan keeps alive a nomadic culture of tremendous hospitality.
Mongolia is bordered by Russia and China, and is the second-largest landlocked country in the world. Its huge swathes of wilderness contain deserts, mountains, lakes with crystal-clear waters and a profusion of animals. In Khovsgol you could almost be in Switzerland, except instead of cows grazing in the meadows, there are horses and yaks. Western Mongolia is altogether more rugged, with 4,000-metre-high peaks and locals practising falconry. Southern Mongolia is home to the Gobi Desert, which it shares with China.
However, Mongolia is in many ways contemporary and is admired for its democracy. It has an unashamedly modern capital, Ulaanbaatar, home to around 45% of the country’s population. Here you will find the incredible Buddhist monastery, Gandan Khiid, and the romantic old Winter Palace of the Bogd Khan.
The Mongolian authorities see tourism as a key growth sector of the economy, so there is a good ESL market. Nearly all the opportunities are in the capital, Ulaanbaatar, with the Success School of English and the American School of Ulaanbaatar being two possibilities. EFL salaries vary widely, with some salaries as low as £350 per month, but in those cases your major expenses will be taken care of. At the other end of the scale you might make over £1,000 per month. TEFL hours are usually fairly long.
