Transitioning into the world of remote ESL instruction requires more than just a laptop and a passion for education; it demands a robust ecosystem of digital tools that travel as well as you do. To help you navigate the complexities of international visas, time zone management, and remote student engagement, we’ve curated the ultimate online teaching toolkit. This guide covers the essential resources — from cloud-based lesson materials to global finance apps — that eliminate the stress of life on the road, allowing you to focus on delivering world-class lessons while exploring the globe.
So you’ve accepted a job teaching English online and are wondering how to get started? As digital nomad teachers, we rely on the right online resources because our classrooms aren’t tied to a single place.
When teaching from different time zones, countries, and wifi setups, having a dependable teacher toolkit removes a huge amount of stress.
The right resources create consistency for the teacher and the student, whether lessons are being taught from an apartment in Lisbon, a café in Medellín, or a guesthouse in Southeast Asia.
Having the right tools makes remote teaching far more affordable and efficient. Online teaching platforms, cloud-based lesson materials, and digital payment systems eliminate the need for physical resources. This flexibility allows digital nomad teachers to choose destinations based on quality of life and cost of living rather than being tied to a job location — one of the biggest advantages of the lifestyle.
Strong online resources, reliable communication tools, virtual classrooms, and online communities help keep digital nomad teachers connected to students and fellow teachers. This lets travelling teachers focus more on what they do best: teaching while exploring the world.

Here are our top resources that we use on the daily as we live our best digital nomad lives.
Top visa and legal resources for remote teachers
Nomad List
A crowdsourced hub for digital nomads that combines cost of living, internet speeds, safety scores, climate, and more! But its real power is in its visa and entry requirements data. You can quickly compare countries and discover what kind of digital nomad or remote-work visa options exist. For teachers, this means being able to plan long-term stays with confidence and avoid unexpected immigration challenges.
VisaGuide.World
A detailed, country-by-country breakdown of visa types, requirements, processing times, and application steps. It’s especially handy for understanding which digital nomad visas allow you to work, for how long, and what documents you’ll need. Teachers living abroad can use this information to avoid costly mistakes and meet legal requirements.

Just Landed
This platform focuses on expat life and relocation by providing practical guides on visas, residency, housing, healthcare, taxes, and local integration. For remote teachers new to living abroad, it’s a great first step toward understanding not just the visa, but everyday-life logistics in a new country.
Digital nomad community forums
While not strictly official tax or visa sites, community spaces, such as Reddit forums, are invaluable for firsthand, real-world insights, including:
- Easiest countries to secure long-term stays
- Tax residency advice
- Tips for dealing with local systems
Pair this with the more official resources above to round out your planning.

Finding your home base: Nomad-friendly accommodation tools
Homestays and pet-sitting
TrustedHousesitters has been our bread and butter outside of Airbnb. For just $129 a year, you can enjoy unlimited homestays worldwide. When pet owners are travelling and don’t want to use a pet hotel, they rely on TrustedHousesitters.
We’ve used TrustedHousesitters in over 16 countries and saved SO much money, from stays as short as two days to as long as two months. We’ve done homestays in small apartments and large houses, which have been great for saving and experiencing local life. Consider it one of your go-to accommodation options.
Co-living platforms
Coliving.com, Outsite, and Nomadico are established co-living spaces with monthly pricing, built-in community, and work-friendly environments. For teachers who want ease and connection (roommates, shared kitchens, co-working areas, and social events), these platforms provide a supportive base while living abroad.
Selina features co-living and community-oriented stays across Latin America, Europe, and beyond. Many locations include co-working spaces, events, and fellow nomads — perfect for teachers looking to connect, socialise, and avoid that “on the road alone” feeling.

Facebook groups and community pages
These are not a single platform, but a powerful community-driven ecosystem where locals and other nomads post affordable long-term rentals, sublets, and roommate opportunities. Examples include “Digital Nomads in ___” and “Expats in ___”. Teachers can often find better prices and more flexible terms here than on bigger booking sites and connect with people who can help find local rentals.
Local rental sites
If you’re planning a longer stay, local sites such as Idealista (Spain), Daft (Ireland), and ImmoScout24 (Germany) often have much cheaper monthly rates than international platforms — older apartments, local leases, and listings not found elsewhere. Teachers willing to do a bit of digging can save big and secure more stable long-term homes.
Managing money abroad: Multi-currency banking for teachers
Wise
This is one of two main apps we use for money. It’s a multi-currency account with low-fee transfers that let you hold and convert money in dozens of currencies at the true market rate. This allows you to pay and receive salaries in different currencies with low conversion fees.
Revolut
We use this mainly with our Polish students. It’s an all-in-one international banking alternative with multi-currency support, currency exchange, and budgeting tools built in.
PayPal
This is our third option. We prefer the first two and only use PayPal if our students don’t have Wise or Revolut. We’ve noticed losing some fees during international transfers, but we like to diversify, as we like to have students from everywhere.

Staying connected: Online communities and local meetup groups
Facebook groups
While focused on jobs, community members often post social events, co-working meetups, and lifestyle advice. Search for groups focused on TEFL/TESOL jobs worldwide and check alumni groups for different TEFL companies to maximise your chances.
Editor’s note: The TEFL Academy has a vibrant, engaged alumni group on Facebook.
The r/digitalnomad and r/TEFL threads are very active subreddits. There, nomads of all kinds share experiences, ask questions, and organise informal hangouts or co-working meetups.
Nomad list
Nomad List has integrated community channels, including Slack or Discord, where members discuss destinations, co-working spaces, visas, and social events. This lets you connect with a global nomad network of long-term travellers and remote teachers, with events, chats, and local meetups often popping up organically.
Meetup.com
Use Meetup to search for remote work hangouts, language exchange groups, co-working meetups, and expat events in cities you’re visiting or living in. This is great for in-person connection, especially in digital nomad hubs like Lisbon, Medellín, Bali, or Chiang Mai.

Essential trip planning tools for the mobile teacher
Skyscanner
A powerful flight search engine that pulls in prices from airlines and booking sites worldwide. It offers flexible dates and you can “explore everywhere“ — perfect when you don’t have fixed plans. Skyscanner’s also great for finding cheap flights between nomad hubs or regional stops.
SafetyWing
Insurance designed for digital nomads and remote workers, with monthly plans and global coverage. It offers long-term flexibility, covers health, travel interruptions, and some emergency needs that typical short-term plans don’t. Also, it’s much more affordable than standard travel insurance for long stays.
Airalo and Holafly
These platforms offer esim data plans you can install straight on your phone — no contracts or physical sim card needed. They provide instant connectivity in dozens of countries, and you only pay for the data you need. They keep you connected for classes, navigation, and communication.
TripIt
This is a smart itinerary app that organises your travel plans in one place. You simply forward confirmation emails — flights, accommodation, visas — and it builds a single organised itinerary. It works offline and syncs across devices, which is helpful when juggling time zones and bookings.
The essential tech stack for a seamless virtual classroom
Co-working space finders
Coworker is a global directory of co-working spaces in cities around the world. You can search by location, price, and amenities (like fast wifi and meeting rooms). Also, you can see real reviews from users who’ve worked there
Time zone management
World Time Buddy is a simple yet powerful time zone converter and scheduler. This is great for comparing multiple time zones at a glance while scheduling classes and meetings with students spread across the globe without confusion.
Productivity and task management
Notion is an all-in-one workspace for notes, calendars, to-dos, lesson planning, and more. You can build lesson plans, track student progress, and keep travel itineraries in one place.

Flexible TEFL companies for independent contractors
Global LT
Based in the US, this is our most-used platform thanks to its flexibility and the control it gives you over your schedule. Classes are sent in a spreadsheet outlining the students’ native language, level, goals, etc. You can decide which classes to accept or decline.
You work as an independent contractor, so you set your own rate. The base rate is $17/hour, but you can charge more. However, you may receive fewer class offers, as those with lower rates are prioritised. This is a pro and a con: it may take time to build a schedule, but it allows you to move forward on your own terms.
Our only complaint is that materials are not provided, but for some classes, you may receive a stipend.
Cambly
While the rate of $10/hour isn’t the highest, you can always expect a full schedule — either by setting your availability or simply hopping on when it suits you.
Cambly is popular with East Asian students, but is used worldwide, so there’s demand at almost any time of day. This makes it a great platform to get started, as materials are provided, and each class can be approached individually since every student has different goals.

With sim cards, accommodation, insurance, payments, and more sorted, managing your TEFL career will be a breeze, so you can explore the world and be the amazing teacher you are.

Accreditation & Quality Assurance
The TEFL Academy was the world’s first TEFL course provider to receive official recognition from government regulated awarding bodies in both the USA and UK. This means when you graduate you’ll hold a globally recognised Level 3 (120hr) Certificate or Level 5 (168hr) Diploma, meaning you can find work anywhere and apply for jobs immediately.
