Teaching On Magic Ears: What You Need To Know

Teaching On Magic Ears: What You Need To Know

Join a global community of over 200,000 TEFL teachers working throughout the world! Enrol me!

With the plethora of online platforms offering English language lessons to learners and teaching positions to English teachers and tutors, it is difficult to know which online teaching companies are legit.

We’re going to get to the bottom of this by asking those who know best: the teachers themselves.

In this series, we’ll talk to teachers currently teaching online in 2026 and ask them the important questions.

Meet Kim

Magic Ears teacher Kim

Kim is a South-African-based educator with an Honours degree in Psychology, a TEFL qualification, and a diploma in Digital Marketing. She started teaching online in 2015 when the industry was new, and opportunities were plentiful. Her career growth in the TEFL industry has taken her all over the world. She has taught both online and in-person and lived abroad for 6 years.

Why did you choose Magic Ears?

During the peak of my TEFL career, Magic Ears was up there with the top online TEFL companies and only hired the best. They had a well-known reputation for competitive hourly rates and a strict hiring process. I decided to give Magic Ears a try because I was looking for a TEFL company that offered Beijing time zone working hours, focused on teaching children’s courses and offered a high booking rate.

I wanted to work for a company that was stable and had a solid reputation in the market, and Magic Ears appealed to me for this reason.

What’s it like teaching on Magic Ears?

I worked at Magic Ears for a total of two years.

My experience with Magic Ears was positive. They had a straightforward recruitment process,  offered me a competitive hourly rate of $18 an hour, and I was generally fully booked Monday – Sunday.

Right now, due to recent law changes in China, Magic Ears does not offer as many online classes to teachers based outside of China as it once did, but it’s still operating.

What I like about Magic Ears was that they provid all the course materials. The lesson content is uploaded into the lesson so you don’t have to manually add the materials.

All you have to do is log into the platform, click ‘enter classroom,’ and all the lesson materials are there.

What I didn’t enjoy about Magic Ears was that even though they advertised that students would be 3 to 16 years of age, most of the students were Young Learners aged 4 to 7 years, making most of the classes Beginner lessons that focused on phonetics.

On the surface you’d expect phonetic classes to be easy, but try teaching English to a kid with no English knowledge or exposure! It requires patience, creativity and a lot of probing. Phonetic lessons can easily become monotonous and so I found it was challenging to keep myself and the student motivated at times, not to mention the added difficulty of managing a 5-year-old kid in a virtual classroom.

What qualifications do you need for Magic Ears?

A challenge that South African teachers in particular face is the nationality requirements set by Magic Ears. For a very long time Magic Ears only accepted teachers from the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand.

The good news is that now they accept South Africans (evidently since I was approved to work for them) but unfortunately there still remains disparities in preference and hourly rates among teachers based on their nationality.

In addition, some of the basic requirements for being approved as a teacher on Magic Ears are that you:

✅ Have prior experience in teaching Young Learners English as a second language.

✅ Have a neutral and clear accent. Preference is given to teachers from the US, UK, Australia, and New Zealand.

✅ Have a TEFL certificate of at least 120-hours.

✅ Can teach between peak hours: 6pm – 9pm Beijing time.

✅ Have a good teaching setup (good lighting, an office, a headset, and an HD webcam).

✅ Pass the demo interview.

What is the Magic Ears hiring process?

Getting started on the Magic Ears platform is quite straightforward! To get started all you need to do is:

  • Fill in your information and submit your application form.
  • Complete and pass your demo lesson (this can either be a recorded demo video or a live demo with a recruiter).
  • Attend your training and coaching session.
  • Complete and pass your trial class.
  • Complete a background check.
  • Sign your contract.

While the process is structured, it can be lengthy depending on the demand and the length of time it takes you to complete your onboard training, trial class and background checks.

Additionally, even though the platform is user-friendly and training support is provided, the company does have high expectations, with particular emphasis on the use of props and high-energy in the class.

It’s also important to note that bookings can take time to build depending on your availability and rankings, but once you have a steady stream of bookings rolling in, it’s a really good source of income with some teachers earning as much as $26 an hour!

Does Magic Ears allocate students to you?

Another reason why I loved working for Magic Ears was that it assigned students to me instead of me having to recruit students myself.

This appealed to me for a number of reasons.

I didn’t have to market myself. Bookings were handled by the Magic Ears class booking team. Plus, good performance was rewarded with higher booking rates and so I was motivated to provide excellent classes to my students so that I could retain my high bookings

How much does Magic Ears pay?

In terms of Magic Ears pay, Magic Ears has one of the most competitive hourly rates available to high-performing teachers! With an hourly rate of up to $26 per hour, many teachers find that they can make a decent income on the platform.

On average, teachers at Magic Ears receive:

  • Base pay: $8 – $12 (per 25-minute class)
  • Bonuses: $1 for punctuality and $1 for opening peak slots

Teachers can also earn additional bonuses of $2 for completing standby classes and an $80 referral bonus for every new teacher they bring onto the platform. Payments are made on the 10th of every month via bank transfer, or PayPal.

⭐ Top tip ⭐  At Magic Ears, your base pay is determined by your demo class performance so take your time to prepare and shine, as this is crucial in the hiring outcome.

What does a typical day look like on Magic Ears?

A typical day at Magic Ears involves high-energy 25-minute group classes for students between the ages of 4 to 12 years.

During weekdays, classes are typically between the hours of 6pm and 9pm Beijing time and on weekends between the hours of 8am and 9pm.

To get my day started, I:

  • log into the Magic Ears platform,
  • review the materials for my booked classes and prepare the necessary props and talking points for my lesson, and
  • ensure that my teaching office setup has enough lighting, and that my props are all within reach.

Because classes are only 25 minutes long, it’s crucial that my classes are engaging. I have to ensure that all students are given a fair chance to participate in the lesson activities and that interaction is not only teacher-to-student but that student-to-student interactions are facilitated too.

After the class is completed, you have to fill out a feedback form, reporting on each student’s performance, including their strengths and weaknesses.

Teachers that are able to work under pressure, make notes efficiently during classes, and know how to manage their time effectively are the ones who succeed in this role.

Teaching four to eight hours a day, especially to Young Learners, can be draining, and so it’s important to set realistic targets for yourself and take reasonable breaks between classes.

What are the students like on Magic Ears?

Most of my students were between four and eight years of age, and Beginner-level lessons. At this level and age, it cab sometimes be difficult to engage with students, particularly due to their short attention spans, helicopter parenting, and the barriers to connection in the virtual classroom.

The great news is that you have the opportunity to make a significant difference in their lives and give them experience with English learning, which could lead them to developing a passion for the language and a life-long skill.

Chinese kids are also absolutely adorable and when you get them engaged, they are with you forever. But you’re going to have to work for it! So come prepared, bring your best hat and get ready to sing along to ABCDEFG!

How does the student feedback system work?

After classes, all teachers are required to submit a feedback report that must be submitted within 5 minutes of the class finish time. This can be stressful, especially when you have a class immediately after!

Some important tips for efficient student feedback on the Magic Ears platform therefore are:

✅ Take notes during your class on each student so that you can easily transfer it over to the feedback report after your class.

✅ Personalise your feedback and highlight your student’s strengths, not only their weaknesses or areas that need improvement. It’s important to have a balance of negative and positive feedback.

✅ Pay attention to the class timer and ensure your classes start and end promptly.

Have you experienced any technical issues on Magic Ears?

Some of the technical issues that I have experienced on the platform involved audio, visual and connectivity difficulties, where the platform would sometimes glitch or even the students would have difficulty on the platform.

As a South African, loadshedding is another important consideration but luckily many teachers buy backup UPS devices to keep them connected. The initial setup of a backup power device can be costly but well worth the long-term security.

Because punctuality is taken seriously, it’s not good for your ratings if you miss a class due to a technical issue. However, if you can provide proof that it was not due to negligence on your part, they won’t penalise you.

All Magic Ears classes have a technical support agent in the class that is ready to assist with technical issues in real-time.

Does Magic Ears offer support to teachers?

Although Magic Ears provides teachers with ample training, onboarding and technical support, it doesn’t have a thriving community where teachers are able to have virtual meetups, or community chat forums.

Is teaching on Magic Ears sustainable as a full-time job?

Overall, I would say that Magic Ears is a great platform to teach English and could work well as a decent source of income, especially if you are a top-tier teacher earning in the $20 – $26/hr range.

But like most of the online teaching jobs on the market today, it’s a contract position where you are responsible for your own taxes and insurance if you lose your employment. Magic Ears does not take responsibility for any labour laws that may protect you in your home country, and so it does come with its own set of risks.

My advice for teachers entering or re-entering the industry is to ensure you have more than one source of income to protect yourself, in case one of the jobs falls through.

Would you recommend Magic Ears?

In sum, I’d definitely recommend the Magic Ears platform if you are looking to earn a competitive hourly rate that is above industry standard.

I do, however, want to emphasise that the company rewards teachers with high energy, props and an interactive teaching background. If you are someone who prefers teaching adults or older Young Learners, or prefers lessons that have a slower pace, Magic Ears is not for you.

It is also important to bear in mind that there have been a lot of new regulations within China in recent years, affecting the job market and demand for online teachers based outside of China. Getting hired by platforms like Magic Ears can be more tricky now than it was six years ago, and so teachers should not be despondent if they are not successful right away.  What is meant for you, will find you!
