Online teaching trends: The growth of online English teaching continues

The 2020 pandemic really put online teaching on the map, and its popularity has continued to skyrocket ever since. All you need is your laptop, strong wifi and a noise-cancelling headset, and you’re good to go!

Teaching online is a blessing for those looking to earn extra income alongside their current jobs, helping teachers on the lower end of the salary spectrum make ends meet, fund travel or simply save up for a rainy day.

With the chance to enjoy a borderless career while exploring innovative methods of teaching English, online teaching is here to stay.

Digital nomad visas and remote work mobility

Teaching English online reflects current trends in education, offering the perfect segue into the digital nomad lifestyle, leading to a surge in location-independent TEFL opportunities globally. More and more countries are introducing digital nomad visas, fuelling the remote work sector.

TEFL hotspots offering digital nomad visas:

  • Portugal – A growing TEFL market, especially in Lisbon and Porto, plus cafés and co-working spaces, makes it friendly for English teachers.
  • Spain – Demand for English teachers and online teaching hubs, particularly in Madrid, Barcelona, and coastal cities.
  • Germany – Larger cities like Berlin, Munich, and Frankfurt have English teaching opportunities, though often more corporate/business-focused.
  • Brazil – Big cities like São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Florianópolis have opportunities, though it’s less saturated than Europe.
  • Taiwan – Valid for six months and renewable for up to two years.
  • Vietnam – Growing TEFL demand in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang, plus low costs and plenty of co-working hubs.

Some TEFL hotspots deserve a closer look.

Spain

Spain has made several noteworthy changes to its digital nomad visa:

  • Higher monthly income requirement from around €2,760 ($3,220) in 2025 to around €3,000 ($3,500) in 2026 for solo travellers
  • Conditional visa extensions for up to five years.
  • Stricter documentation — signed/stamped bank statements, clear remote work documentation, etc.

Vietnam

Vietnam is a TEFL hotspot thanks to its natural landscapes, but also its wonderfully low cost of living, where teachers thrive — and as a digital nomad, so can you!

The only snag is that Vietnam does not currently offer a digital nomad visa, so travellers use E-visas (30-90 days), business visas, or tourist visa runs.

However, Vietnam did propose its Golden Visa in 2025. This allows residency for 5–10 years, but is still in the pipeworks, so keep an eye on official immigration updates for changes.

⚡Newsflash: Non-EU/EEA citizens and digital nomads keen to teach in Europe in the Balkans, keep Bulgaria on your radar in 2026 — it’s introduced its very own digital nomad visa, valid for one year and renewable for another.

The rise of the “niche” teacher: Moving beyond General English

The TEFL job market is highly flexible. There are SO many ways to gain your footing, whether that’s full-time, abroad, online, part-time, or freelance! However, it’s a very competitive landscape out here, and in 2026, credentials are tightening up.

We know you’re wondering what that means for your CV. Here’s what you’ll need to stay competitive:

  • Higher qualifications and specialisation: Go niche with microcredentials (short specialist certificates). Pursue top-up TEFL courses like Teaching Business English or Teaching Young Learners or an ESP (English for Specific Purposes) course.
  • Practical skills: Develop your hard and soft skills, from cultural awareness to digital know-how.
  • Multilingual skills: Fluency in Spanish, Japanese, Mandarin, or other languages opens doors to bilingual programmes, adult business classes, and diverse student groups.
  • Proof of experience: Keep evidence of your expertise with student reviews and testimonials (especially for online teachers — positive reviews boost bookings), performance metrics (e.g., student retention rates), CPD points, demo videos, and so forth.

Professional development is essential if you want to stay ahead of modern trends in teaching, spread your wings and take your TEFL career to new heights.

From AI anxiety to AI mastery: Your newest teaching assistant

Artificial intelligence is everywhere, and it’s revolutionising the way we teach. Generative AI, such as ChatGPT and Gemini, is creating lesson plans and providing feedback, while specialised AI-powered tools like Kahoot! are enhancing personalised instruction.

Thanks to AI, teachers are becoming more creative and using tech in ways that make lessons more interactive and engaging.

On the flipside, the pervasiveness of AI has reminded us of the need for human connection. Too much screen time can lead to feelings of isolation.

That’s why more teachers are turning to “teaching unplugged” methods such as Dogme.

The goal? Human-centred interactions that prioritise people and conversation.

Teacher well-being and work–life balance

Fellow teachers know that a teacher’s role goes well beyond the job description: we’re mentors, tech troubleshooters, cultural guides, and sometimes even cheerleaders — and this is generally expected!

To be a good teacher, you need to be a happy teacher — or at least not running on empty.

That’s why teachers are bolstering their boundaries by carving out time for self-care to avoid burnout. They are also integrating trauma awareness into their classrooms to enhance student inclusivity and mental well-being.

In 2026, teachers are:

  • Prioritising trauma-informed pedagogy: Creating inclusive classrooms and culturally-aware lessons.
  • Setting clear boundaries: Checking that contracts are reasonable, sticking to set hours, and supporting fair working conditions.
  • Training in mental health first aid.
  • Building support networks: Connecting with expat communities for support.

Tech advances like AI are great for freeing up time. They act as teaching assistants, letting teachers offload tasks like lesson planning, grading, and feedback, creating more space for me-time.

Countries leading this holistic trend are Vietnam, Thailand and South Korea, with capped weekly teaching hours, ample vacation time and extensive expat networks.

Sustainable and ethical TEFL practices

Teaching comes with great responsibility, which is why the latest education trends emphasise sustainable and ethical TEFL practices.

Teachers are tackling climate change, exploitation, low-quality teaching, and cultural insensitivity, while promoting responsible AI use in their classrooms.

Ways teachers are putting sustainability and ethics into practice:

  • Equity and non-discrimination: Pushback against native speakerism (discrimination based on your first language), promoting equal opportunities for all qualified teachers regardless of accent or origin.
  • Cultural sensitivity: Respecting local culture and avoiding a one-size-fits-all approach.
  • Embedding sustainability: Eco-conscious teaching supports environmental awareness through environmental topics and volunteering with conservation-focused programmes.
  • Making eco-conscious travel choices: Digital nomads are “going green” — choosing eco-lodges, green-certified hostels, and homestays.
  • AI ethics: Clear guidelines around AI, plagiarism prevention, open discussions about classroom ethics, and thoughtful use of AI.

As AI use increases, some teachers are opting to balance this out with low-tech alternatives like graphic organisers, role plays, debates and a TEFL classic favourite: flashcards
