Tbilisi, the capital, is still redolent of an age-old Eurasian crossroads
A deeply complicated history has given Georgia a wonderful heritage of architecture and art
Not many people realise that, besides being a girl’s name and a US state, Georgia is also an Eastern European country. Situated between Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia, it’s a country with a rich and fascinating history. It’s a country of cathedrals, historic buildings and quaint villages and it even claims to be the birthplace of wine.
The capital city Tbilisi is a beautiful, old but cosmopolitan city, where you can spend many hours drinking coffee in sidewalk cafes. If you’re interested in the wine industry, head to Kakheti, from where you can explore the winelands and numerous castles and monasteries. If you take a hike up Mount Kazberg you will find a spectacular monastery at the top; you won’t find a monastery with a better view! If you’re a fan of winter sports, head to the ski slopes of Bakuriani.
Georgia allows visitors to embark on a rich historical journey through its ruins and architectural beauty, but the best thing about Georgia is the people. Georgian people are famous for their kindness and hospitality to visitors and guests. Friendship is important and guests are considered to be gifts from God. Rest assured, you will never be lonely in Georgia.
Georgian is a fascinating language which has no similarities to other languages. Russian is also widely spoken here but English is becoming more popular, especially with the younger generations, and there are now numerous initiatives by the Georgian government to extend English teaching. Teaching jobs can be found in private language schools and government schools. Teaching contracts may include reimbursement for flights and accommodation.
There is a volunteer programme organised by the government to place foreign teachers with local teachers in schools and the two teachers will work together in planning and delivering lessons, which can be a great help when starting out teaching. A number of jobs are considered volunteer placements and so salaries will be very low, but there are other paid opportunities available, especially in private language schools.
If you’re looking for a friendly country with a warm and supportive teaching environment, come to Georgia and gain some experience and enjoy this fascinating country.
