Czech Republic Job Listings

Although there is no strict requirement for a potential teacher to have a TEFL certificate in order to secure an ESL or EFL job in the Czech Republic, your chances are significantly better if you do have one. A degree is essential in the cities, but a rural school may overlook this in order to obtain the services of a native speaker.

Jobs are readily available in private and public schools – primary and secondary, as well as in one of the many English academies scattered throughout the country. And although the preference is for European Union citizens, there is no hard-and-fast rule, especially if you are willing to work outside of the larger metro areas in the countryside where there is a large demand for English native speakers. University teaching is probably not an option however, unless you have significant education and experience.

Employers can assist you with visa requirements if you are coming from a non-EU country. The Czech Republic is not as relaxed as some countries when it comes to these requirements, and you could be subject to deportation should you be found to be in violation of employment laws.

You may be paid on an hourly or monthly basis, with monthly salaries ranging from between USD $1000 to $1300, or an hourly rate of USD $12. Whilst that does not seem like a lot, bear in mind that life in the Czech Republic is much more affordable than in other parts of Europe. The cost of living outside of the cities, in the country’s rural areas, is far cheaper. There is a steady and growing demand for ESL and EFL teachers in these areas, and you should not encounter much difficulty finding a job in the picturesque and storied Czech countryside, if you are so inclined.

As for accommodation, some employers may offer you shared lodgings with other ex-pat teachers or assist you in finding your own apartment if you are not amenable to sharing. That said, do not dismiss the idea of sharing – it can be very nice to have a group of like-minded people close at hand – especially if this is your first time living in a foreign country. And there is a lot to be said for the sharing of ideas, particularly when it comes to discussing classroom problems you may be encountering, particularly so if you are a relative newcomer to the ESL world in need of a little guidance. You will probably share the teaching of your class with a Czech native speaker, who, among other things, will handle the grammar part of the students’ learning. But they will have grammar questions that they expect you to explain – so a roommate or two just may come in handy.

Czech students – especially the adults – expect a lot from their teachers, but on the other hand, they are a very committed group, and generally speaking give their utmost to their studies. The importance of learning English in the global economy is not lost on them, making the whole ESL or EFL teaching experience a very enjoyable one indeed.
