There is more to this Scandinavian country than flat-pack furniture and meatballs. With one of the highest standards of living in the world and an abundance of natural beauty, Sweden is an attractive prospect for many travellers, including ESL teachers.TEFL jobs in Sweden are not always easy to find, but can be one of the best ways to earn a wage whilst living in the country.
The capital of Stockholm is an economic powerhouse, with low unemployment and excellent public transport. It is also one of the cleanest cities in the world and offers a vast array of historical buildings, museums and green areas to enjoy.Outside of the capital, the low population density allows for plenty of opportunity for solitude in which to enjoy the natural wonders of the country.Outdoor pursuits such as hiking, riding and camping are all popular, especially during the long daylight hours in the summer months, and are popular with ESL teachers employed in TEFL jobs in Sweden.
The Swedish culture is one of openness, with equality and fairness seen as important factors in everyday life and the operations of the country. The commonly used Swedish term ‘lagom’, meaning just right, moderate or in balance, summarises the basis of the culture well and TEFL jobs in Sweden give ESL teachers the opportunity to experience this philosophy at first hand.
Food is another highlight for the ESL traveller, with cuisine typical of the Scandinavian region and a heavy focus on preserved and pickled foods.Open sandwiches, crispbreads and cured fish are all commonly eaten.Fine dining is also starting to make its mark in the country, with a number of Michelin-starred restaurants in the capital, although taking a TEFL job in Sweden may mean it takes a while to save enough money to visit these establishments.
Although Swedish is the official language, English is commonly spoken at a high level throughout the country, and is taught from an early age. This does limit the opportunities for ESL/EFL teachers somewhat, however for those with experience, formal teaching qualifications or expertise in a particular area such as business English, TEFL jobs in Sweden can be found. The majority of EFL positions tend to be in the larger cities such as Stockholm.
Folkuniversitetets, or Folkuniversities, are common throughout the country and are government-subsidised colleges for adults to study various subjects, including English.ESL positions are available, but demand is not high.ESL jobs in this type of institution will pay a moderate salary equivalent to £1000 to £1400 per month, which is likely to cover living costs but make saving difficult due to the relatively high cost of living. Most ESL teachers will find sharing accommodation is the most affordable option and avoiding eating out regularly is the best way to limit spending.
Private academies are not abundant and are mainly focused on the business English market, however they do offer another option for those looking for TEFL jobs in Sweden.EFL teachers with specific experience or certification in business English, or a degree in a relevant subject such as Engineering, in addition to a TEFL qualification, may be able to find work in this type of school.
In general, EU citizens are preferred by language schools in order to limit red tape.Teaching English in Sweden tends to be a more realistic proposition when applying for positions from within the country, as face-to-face interviews are preferred.ESL teachers from non-EU countries should secure a contract before travelling to Sweden if possible, as sponsorship may be required.
