Australia’s leading combined TEFL course

Our combined Level 5 TEFL course leads to a 168hr TEFL diploma. This is the quickest way to get your TEFL Diploma in Australia.

The course provides an in-depth overview of TEFL and is the best option if you want to find formal work teaching English, such as the contracted roles from our TEFL Jobs Board, or government teaching programmes, which usually include accommodation, flight reimbursement and help to get your work visa.

By choosing our combined course, you’ll set yourself apart from other candidates with your commitment to face-to-face as well as online learning. Although it is not essential to get this experience, you’ll become classroom confident through our day-long classroom teaching practice, where you’ll receive six hours of peer-to-peer teaching practice, learn about classroom management skills and receive real-time feedback from one of our expert TEFL trainers. A separate 10-hour Teaching Practice Certificate will be awarded on completion.

Enrol today and you’ll also receive $1010 of additional online learning for FREE, including three top-up courses (Teaching business English; Teaching online and 1:1; and, Teaching young learners), exclusive live access to our weekly one-hour topical webinars designed to support your learning, our TEFL Handbook and TEFL Resource Pack

The TEFL Academy has won the Go Overseas and GoAbroad Top TEFL Awards for three years (2019, 2020 & 2021) in a row! We were also the first TEFL course provider to receive official recognition from government regulated awarding bodies in both the UK and USA.

The course is regulated by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual), a U.K. government department, and awarded by Qualifi, a U.K. government-recognised awarding body.

Our Level 5 TEFL diploma is Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC) approved as meeting the criteria for Approved Quality Curriculum (AQC) status. The DEAC is a U.S. Department of Education recognised accreditor.

So, after successful completion of your TEFL course, you’ll receive an internationally recognised Level 5 TEFL Diploma (168hrs) — the only qualification you’ll need to teach English online or internationally.

Your qualification will be at the same level as a Diploma of Higher Education (DipHE), a foundation degree, CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and Trinity CertTESOL (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) qualifications.

The online portion of the course can be started before or after your classroom training and consists of 158 hours of learning. Our combined Level 5 TEFL diploma course contains ten mandatory units, all assessed with an exam at the end of each. Units 5, 7 and 10 include coursework-assessed assignments marked by our trainers. You will be given six-months access to complete your course, with some students able to complete in just four to six weeks when studying full time.

The course covers every aspect of becoming a successful TEFL teacher, from planning your first lesson to applying for your first job. With so much choice and such a vast amount of conflicting information available on the Internet, it can be difficult for potential TEFL course students to make the correct choice. The Level 5 version of our TEFL course is a more in-depth overview of TEFL and is a good choice if you wish to gain formal teaching jobs, which usually include accommodation, flight reimbursements and help in gaining a work visa. Upon completion, you will be awarded an internationally recognised Level 5 TEFL Diploma (168 hours), which is regulated by Ofqual (UK government) and DEAC-Approved (US Department of Education National Accreditor).

A regulated Level 5 qualification means that Ofqual (UK government) has approved the qualification to be at a recognised level of achievement. Our Level 5 TEFL Diploma (168hrs) is the same level as the following qualifications: a diploma of higher education (DipHE), a foundation degree and the CELTA and Trinity CertTESOL qualifications.

We also offer a Level 3 version of our course, which is an introduction to TEFL and is perfect for anyone looking for casual work teaching English, such as volunteering, backpacking or finding work “in-country”, and some online teaching roles. It requires less of a time commitment (120 hrs) and is more cost-effective, so it can be a way of fast-tracking into the industry for someone with a short-term teaching plan. The course you should choose depends entirely on your own situation, needs and teaching plans.

All regulated Level 5 TEFL courses are 150hrs+ in length. We have never seen a single employer ask for more than 168hrs of TEFL training.

Accreditation FAQ

The simple answer is, we just don't know! Recruiters offering the best opportunities with the most competitive packages are now asking for level 5 TEFL qualifications. All regulated level 5 courses are 150hrs+ in length. We have never seen a single employer ask for more than 168hrs of TEFL training.

A Level 5 TEFL Diploma is the gold standard of TEFL qualifications, therefore we only offer this option for our level 5 students.

We know that navigating your way through the TEFL web of courses is very confusing. This is why we try to keep it simple, giving you exactly what you need to get the best jobs around the world!

The Level 3 and Level 5 versions of our TEFL course are regulated by Ofqual (UK government department) and awarded by Qualifi, a UK government-recognised awarding body. Our Level 5 TEFL Course is DEAC-approved as meeting the criteria for Approved Quality Curriculum (AQC) status. The DEAC is a U.S. Department of Education National Accreditor.

The TEFL Academy is fully accredited by Qualifi an Ofqual (The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation, a UK government department) regulated awarding body. Qualifi have robust quality assurance systems and procedures in place which all course providers must successfully pass in order to be accredited under the scheme.

Potential TEFL course students should remember that their prospective employers are likely to be based outside Australia. This means that accreditation bodies based solely in Australia may not be recognised by employers abroad. This is why The TEFL Academy has chosen Qualifi, as they offer international accreditation for training course providers.

You can find out more about Qualifi on their website: https://qualifi.net

The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) regulates qualifications, examinations and assessments in England and vocational qualifications in Northern Ireland.

Ofqual is a non-ministerial UK government department.

You can verify our qualifications on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications:

Level 3 here,
Level 5 here.

Ofqual recognise Awarding Organisations like Qualifi and regulate qualifications like ours. An Ofqual regulated TEFL qualification will be recognised worldwide and is highly respected by employers.

The Distance Education Accrediting Commission was founded in 1926 and is a U.S. Department of Education National Accreditor. DEAC's goal is to ensure a high standard of educational quality in the distance education institutions it approves by requiring compliance with its published standards, policies and procedures.

Our Level 5 TEFL Course is DEAC-approved as meeting the criteria for Approved Quality Curriculum (AQC) status.

You can find out more about the DEAC on their website: https://www.deac.org/

When you hear about “levels” this refers to the UK government’s framework for qualifications. This framework allows learners studying UK government regulated qualifications to understand where their qualification sits in comparison to other qualifications. A regulated level 5 qualification means that Ofqual (UK government), have approved the qualification to be at a recognised level of achievement. Our Level 5 TEFL Diploma (168hrs) is the same level as the following qualifications: a diploma of higher education (DipHE), a foundation degree and the CELTA and Trinity CertTESOL qualifications.

A TEFL Diploma is simply a slightly higher level of qualification than a "Certificate". It will help your CV/Resume stand out against other applicants for TEFL jobs. Our Diploma is the highest Level 5 Diploma available, so courses advertised as an "Advanced Diploma" are equal to our qualification.

A regulated qualification means that it is officially recognised by government and sits on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications.

You can verify our qualifications on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications:

Level 3 here,
Level 5 here.

Choosing to study a regulated qualification is your guarantee of quality. Course providers offering regulated qualifications must comply with very tough quality assurance rules and procedures. This ensures that:

  • The staff delivering and assisting students are suitably qualified
  • The course provider has the resources to effectively deliver the qualification
  • The course itself effectively teaches and assesses the qualifications aims
  • The contents of the course have been written and designed by industry professionals and peer reviewed
  • The feedback and grades given to learners is fair, moderated and meets modern academic standards
  • Officially regulated by the UK government, therefore the qualification will be internationally recognised by schools, employers, foreign embassies and governments of most other countries.

Any qualification that is officially recognised by the UK government will sit on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications. Make sure to ask your course provider to provide a link to the register for their qualification.

You can verify our qualifications on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications:

Level 3 here,
Level 5 here.

You may see cheap TEFL courses advertised online that claim to be a “level”, such as “Level 5 140-Hour TEFL Course” (often advertised on daily deal websites), unfortunately these courses are not the level they claim to be and are highly misleading.

The level of a course tells learners where the qualification sits on the UK’s Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF).  If a course is not listed on the Register of Regulated Qualifications, then it is not really a level at all. You can find our qualification on the register here.

Make sure you ask any TEFL training provider that claims to be offering a “level” of TEFL course to provide a link to the Register of Regulated Qualifications. If they cannot provide this, then the qualification is not the level they claim it to be and will not be accepted by foreign embassies and employers.

TEFL and TESOL are both acronyms for teaching English to non-native English speakers. Both acronyms can be used to describe qualifications which certify you to teach English as a foreign language. To a large extent, "TEFL" and "TESOL" are used interchangeably.

  • TEFL - Teaching English as a Foreign Language
  • TESOL - Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
