Homework isn’t usually very popular with a lot of English language students. But, as a TEFL teacher you know it’s a good way to reinforce what’s been taught in class. It also helps with their understanding. The tip is to make sure the homework is varied and interesting.

Ideas for homework tasks from a TEFL Teacher

Videos

Students love watching videos. As a TEFL teacher, you can pick out a relevant English YouTube video and set questions that the student’s must answer. A good example is for children learning food vocabulary.

The video of Maisie Mouse is colourful with clear English. You can get the students to name the food they see as well as other questions like ‘what animals and colours do you see’? Teenagers might like a music video. You can get them to look up the answers to questions you give them about the singer or the group.

Worksheets

Most TEFL teachers will work from workbooks. You’ll often find consolidation exercises in the back of student’s class books. They can do these exercises as homework to help them remember the vocabulary and the grammar of each unit.

Reading

Reading a book is often difficult in a class because of time constraints. As a TEFL teacher, setting homework with a graded reader will make sure they get to practice book work. Ask them to read two or three pages and set them questions that they can’t answer if they haven’t done the reading. Reading is a good way to reinforce wh-questions if you have been learning this in class.

An Interview

Ask your students to find a photograph in a magazine or newspaper of a person they like. Then get them to make up ten questions in English that they would like to ask them. You can even get them to do it letter form and see if you can send them off to a TV or radio station. If they get a reply it will make you a very popular TEFL teacher!

Jumping Ahead

Ask your students to look at the next unit in their book. Find out what the topic is about and ask them to bring in some photographs, pictures of magazines or drawings of some of the things included in the unit. This might be food or clothes items. The weather or animals. You can then go through the pronunciation and spelling before you start the new unit.
