Course options explained

With so much choice and such a vast amount of conflicting information available on the Internet, it can be difficult for potential TEFL course students to make the correct choice. The Level 5 version of our TEFL course is a more in-depth overview of TEFL and is a good choice if you wish to gain formal teaching jobs, which usually include accommodation, flight reimbursements and help in gaining a work visa. Upon completion, you will be awarded an internationally recognised Level 5 TEFL Diploma (168 hours), which is regulated by Ofqual (UK government) and DEAC-Approved (US Department of Education National Accreditor).

A regulated Level 5 qualification means that Ofqual (UK government) has approved the qualification to be at a recognised level of achievement. Our Level 5 TEFL Diploma (168hrs) is the same level as the following qualifications: a diploma of higher education (DipHE), a foundation degree and the CELTA and Trinity CertTESOL qualifications.

We also offer a Level 3 version of our course, which is an introduction to TEFL and is perfect for anyone looking for casual work teaching English, such as volunteering, backpacking or finding work “in-country”, and some online teaching roles. It requires less of a time commitment (120 hrs) and is more cost-effective, so it can be a way of fast-tracking into the industry for someone with a short-term teaching plan. The course you should choose depends entirely on your own situation, needs and teaching plans.

All regulated Level 5 TEFL Diplomas are 150hrs+ in length. We have never seen a single employer ask for more than 168hrs of TEFL training.

Accreditation FAQ

The simple answer is, we just don't know! Recruiters offering the best opportunities with the most competitive packages are now asking for level 5 TEFL qualifications. All regulated level 5 courses are 150hrs+ in length. We have never seen a single employer ask for more than 168hrs of TEFL training.

A Level 5 TEFL Diploma is the gold standard of TEFL qualifications, therefore we only offer this option for our Level 5 students.

We know that navigating your way through the TEFL web of courses is very confusing. This is why we try to keep it simple, giving you exactly what you need to get the best jobs around the world!

The Level 3 and Level 5 versions of our TEFL course are regulated by Ofqual (UK government department) and awarded by Qualifi, a UK government-recognised awarding body. The Level 3 and Level 5 versions of our TEFL course are DEAC-approved as meeting the criteria for Approved Quality Curriculum (AQC) status. The DEAC is a U.S. Department of Education National Accreditor.

The TEFL Academy is fully accredited by Qualifi an Ofqual (The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation, a UK government department) regulated awarding body. Qualifi have robust quality assurance systems and procedures in place which all course providers must successfully pass in order to be accredited under the scheme.

Potential TEFL course students should remember that their prospective employers are likely to be based outside Europe. This means that accreditation bodies based solely in Europe may not be recognised by employers abroad. This is why The TEFL Academy has chosen Qualifi, as they offer international accreditation for training course providers.

You can find out more about Qualifi on their website: https://qualifi.net

The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) regulates qualifications, examinations and assessments in England and vocational qualifications in Northern Ireland.

Ofqual is a non-ministerial UK government department.

You can verify our qualifications on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications:

Level 3 here,
Level 5 here.

Ofqual recognise Awarding Organisations like Qualifi and regulate qualifications like ours. An Ofqual regulated TEFL qualification will be recognised worldwide and is highly respected by employers.

The Distance Education Accrediting Commission was founded in 1926 and is a U.S. Department of Education National Accreditor. DEAC's goal is to ensure a high standard of educational quality in the distance education institutions it approves by requiring compliance with its published standards, policies and procedures.

Our Level 5 TEFL Course is DEAC-approved as meeting the criteria for Approved Quality Curriculum (AQC) status.

You can find out more about the DEAC on their website: https://www.deac.org/

When you hear about “levels” this refers to the UK government’s framework for qualifications. This framework allows learners studying UK government regulated qualifications to understand where their qualification sits in comparison to other qualifications. A regulated level 5 qualification means that Ofqual (UK government), have approved the qualification to be at a recognised level of achievement. Our Level 5 TEFL Diploma (168hrs) is the same level as the following qualifications: a diploma of higher education (DipHE), a foundation degree and the CELTA and Trinity CertTESOL qualifications.

A TEFL Diploma is simply a slightly higher level of qualification than a "Certificate". It means you will have completed a more in-depth TEFL course.

A regulated qualification means that it is officially recognised by government and sits on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications.

You can verify our qualifications on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications:

Level 3 here,
Level 5 here.

Any qualification that is officially recognised by the UK government will sit on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications. Make sure to ask your course provider to provide a link to the register for their qualification.

You can verify our qualifications on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications:

Level 3 here,
Level 5 here.

You may see cheap TEFL courses advertised online that claim to be a “level”, such as “Level 5 140-Hour TEFL Course” (often advertised on daily deal websites), unfortunately these courses are not the level they claim to be and are highly misleading.

The level of a course tells learners where the qualification sits on the UK’s Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF).  If a course is not listed on the Register of Regulated Qualifications, then it is not really a level at all. You can find our qualification on the register here.

Make sure you ask any TEFL training provider that claims to be offering a “level” of TEFL course to provide a link to the Register of Regulated Qualifications. If they cannot provide this, then the qualification is not the level they claim it to be and will not be accepted by foreign embassies and employers.

TEFL and TESOL are both acronyms for teaching English to non-native English speakers. Both acronyms can be used to describe qualifications which certify you to teach English as a foreign language. To a large extent, "TEFL" and "TESOL" are used interchangeably.

  • TEFL - Teaching English as a Foreign Language
  • TESOL - Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

  • Q. How satisfied were you with the classroom element of the course? A. The classroom element was a great experience! It gave me a chance to meet new people. People who were interested in similar things and future goals and plans as what I have. I was able to learn from not only my classmates, but our TEFL lecturer, who was very knowledgeable in the content that she taught and it was clear that she was not only talking about what she had studied herself, but from real experiences that she had had or that she knows of other people having. It was overall an incredible experience and open my eyes to, not only the reality of TEFL, but also the opportunities that TEFL can bring for not only me but the students I will be teaching.
  • Q. How satisfied were you with your TEFL Trainer? A. Rosalind was a great trainer! She made the classroom experience fun. She was always there to help and answer questions. It was clear that she knew what she was teaching and put in a lot of effort in what she was teaching, as well as how she would teach it. She ensured that we understood what was being taught before moving on. When we didn't understand she ensured that she helped us get back on track, before moving on to the next topic. She used real experiences to explain to us what we can expect and how we can approach the situation in the best possible way. She encouraged a good friendly atmosphere in the class which helped us get along and to be ae to work together constantly. She made the experience even better for us all!

  • Q. How satisfied were you with the classroom element of the course? A. For the amount of hours and as extensive as it was, the teacher Brian was extremely knowledgeable, helpful and encouraging. It was engaging and wasn’t nearly as painful as what sitting in a classroom for 10 hours would sound like it would be.
  • Q. How satisfied were you with your TEFL Tutor? A. He went above an beyond to patiently answer our questions and keep us entertained and interested

  • Q. How satisfied were you with your TEFL Tutor? A. Built up a great relationship with the class and made learning the sections covered interesting. I also enjoyed her 30 minute lesson in Japanese to allow the class to experience being taught in a non-native language.
  • Q. How satisfied were you with the classroom element of the course? A. I had an excellent learning experience and really enjoyed meeting like-minded people and such a passionate teacher.

  • Q. How satisfied were you with the TEFL Tutor? A. I found Yohan extremely knowledgeable in his field and he was entertaining and funny throughout. Nothing was left to be desired of the course.

  • Q. How satisfied were you with the classroom element of the course? A. The weekend’s facilitator, Rene did a terrific job. She approached each day with the energy and enthusiasm that we would have to convey to our own students when teaching. She really ‘showed’ us and didn’t just lecture. I have a lot more insight and knowledge now of what it takes to teach EFL, as well as some of the things I can expect when I go overseas.
  • Q. How satisfied were you with your TEFL Tutor? A. As stated before, Rene’s tutoring is commendable! She approached each session with energy and enthusiasm and was an exemplary teacher. It allowed me to see exactly what is required to be a good and effective teacher. Rather than telling us, ‘do this or do that’, she showed us through her own teaching.
