Course options explained

With so much choice and such a vast amount of conflicting information available on the Internet, it can be difficult for potential TEFL course students to make the correct choice. The Level 5 version of our TEFL course is a more in-depth overview of TEFL and is a good choice if you wish to gain formal teaching jobs, which usually include accommodation, flight reimbursements and help in gaining a work visa. Upon completion, you will be awarded an internationally recognised Level 5 TEFL Diploma (168 hours), which is regulated by Ofqual (UK government) and DEAC-Approved (US Department of Education National Accreditor).

A regulated Level 5 qualification means that Ofqual (UK government) has approved the qualification to be at a recognised level of achievement. Our Level 5 TEFL Diploma (168hrs) is the same level as the following qualifications: a diploma of higher education (DipHE), a foundation degree and the CELTA and Trinity CertTESOL qualifications.

We also offer a Level 3 version of our course, which is an introduction to TEFL and is perfect for anyone looking for casual work teaching English, such as volunteering, backpacking or finding work “in-country”, and some online teaching roles. It requires less of a time commitment (120 hrs) and is more cost-effective, so it can be a way of fast-tracking into the industry for someone with a short-term teaching plan. The course you should choose depends entirely on your own situation, needs and teaching plans.

All regulated Level 5 TEFL Diplomas are 150hrs+ in length. We have never seen a single employer ask for more than 168hrs of TEFL training.

He started out by teaching English to children in Asia in 2001, and also became a speaking Examiner on Cambridge Young Learners as well as KEY/PET/FCE exams. Starting in 2003, he taught adult ESL in various countries and in different educational contexts, both public/private schools and universities mostly in Asia and Europe. Upon receiving his Ph.D. in ELT in 2012, Huss began teaching ELT methodology and linguistics courses to prospective teachers of English. In 2017, Huss completed his DELTA and ever since, he has been training teachers on various training courses in a number of countries. Currently, Huss is involved in both ESL instruction and teacher training in Montréal and Toronto, Canada. As a result of traveling and teaching English around the world, Huss has had a chance to become familiar with quite a few languages, among which he speaks French, Turkish, Armenian, and Persian fluently. It is easy to see how learning and teaching languages have become his twin passion in life.

Accreditation FAQ

The simple answer is, we just don't know! Recruiters offering the best opportunities with the most competitive packages are now asking for level 5 TEFL qualifications. All regulated level 5 courses are 150hrs+ in length. We have never seen a single employer ask for more than 168hrs of TEFL training.

A Level 5 TEFL Diploma is the gold standard of TEFL qualifications, therefore we only offer this option for our level 5 students.

We know that navigating your way through the TEFL web of courses is very confusing. This is why we try to keep it simple, giving you exactly what you need to get the best jobs around the world!

The Level 3 and Level 5 versions of our TEFL course are regulated by Ofqual (UK government department) and awarded by Qualifi, a UK government-recognised awarding body. The Level 3 and Level 5 versions of our TEFL course are DEAC-approved as meeting the criteria for Approved Quality Curriculum (AQC) status. The DEAC is a U.S. Department of Education National Accreditor.

The TEFL Academy is fully accredited by Qualifi an Ofqual (The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation, a UK government department) regulated awarding body. Qualifi have robust quality assurance systems and procedures in place which all course providers must successfully pass in order to be accredited under the scheme.

Potential TEFL course students should remember that their prospective employers are likely to be based outside Canada. This means that accreditation bodies based solely in Canada may not be recognised by employers abroad. This is why The TEFL Academy has chosen Qualifi, as they offer international accreditation for training course providers.

You can find out more about Qualifi on their website: https://qualifi.net

The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) regulates qualifications, examinations and assessments in England and vocational qualifications in Northern Ireland.

Ofqual is a non-ministerial UK government department.

You can verify our qualifications on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications:

Level 3 here,
Level 5 here.

Ofqual recognise Awarding Organisations like Qualifi and regulate qualifications like ours. An Ofqual regulated TEFL qualification will be recognised worldwide and is highly respected by employers.

The Distance Education Accrediting Commission was founded in 1926 and is a U.S. Department of Education National Accreditor. DEAC's goal is to ensure a high standard of educational quality in the distance education institutions it approves by requiring compliance with its published standards, policies and procedures.

Our Level 5 TEFL Course is DEAC-approved as meeting the criteria for Approved Quality Curriculum (AQC) status.

You can find out more about the DEAC on their website: https://www.deac.org/

When you hear about “levels” this refers to the UK government’s framework for qualifications. This framework allows learners studying UK government regulated qualifications to understand where their qualification sits in comparison to other qualifications. A regulated level 5 qualification means that Ofqual (UK government), have approved the qualification to be at a recognised level of achievement. Our Level 5 TEFL Diploma (168hrs) is the same level as the following qualifications: a diploma of higher education (DipHE), a foundation degree and the CELTA and Trinity CertTESOL qualifications.

A TEFL Diploma is simply a slightly higher level of qualification than a "Certificate". It will help your CV/Resume stand out against other applicants for TEFL jobs. Our Diploma is the highest Level 5 Diploma available, so courses advertised as an "Advanced Diploma" are equal to our qualification.

A regulated qualification means that it is officially recognised by government and sits on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications.

You can verify our qualifications on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications:

Level 3 here,
Level 5 here.

Choosing to study a regulated qualification is your guarantee of quality. Course providers offering regulated qualifications must comply with very tough quality assurance rules and procedures. This ensures that:

  • The staff delivering and assisting students are suitably qualified
  • The course provider has the resources to effectively deliver the qualification
  • The course itself effectively teaches and assesses the qualifications aims
  • The contents of the course have been written and designed by industry professionals and peer reviewed
  • The feedback and grades given to learners is fair, moderated and meets modern academic standards
  • Officially regulated by the UK government, therefore the qualification will be internationally recognised by schools, employers, foreign embassies and governments of most other countries.

Any qualification that is officially recognised by the UK government will sit on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications. Make sure to ask your course provider to provide a link to the register for their qualification.

You can verify our qualifications on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications:

Level 3 here,
Level 5 here.

You may see cheap TEFL courses advertised online that claim to be a “level”, such as “Level 5 140-Hour TEFL Course” (often advertised on daily deal websites), unfortunately these courses are not the level they claim to be and are highly misleading.

The level of a course tells learners where the qualification sits on the UK’s Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF).  If a course is not listed on the Register of Regulated Qualifications, then it is not really a level at all. You can find our qualification on the register here.

Make sure you ask any TEFL training provider that claims to be offering a “level” of TEFL course to provide a link to the Register of Regulated Qualifications. If they cannot provide this, then the qualification is not the level they claim it to be and will not be accepted by foreign embassies and employers.

TEFL and TESOL are both acronyms for teaching English to non-native English speakers. Both acronyms can be used to describe qualifications which certify you to teach English as a foreign language. To a large extent, "TEFL" and "TESOL" are used interchangeably.

  • TEFL - Teaching English as a Foreign Language
  • TESOL - Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

  • Q. How satisfied were you with the classroom element of the course? A. The detailed content and carry-through of knowledge was well executed. It provided an indepth view of how scenarios would play out in reality. The tutor was also very helpful in aiding all of us along the way. I now feel at ease continuing with the online aspects, now that I've interacted with others who are also in the same boat as me.
  • Q. How satisfied were you with your TEFL Trainer? A. Baphiwe is knowledgeable in this field therefore she could effectively guide us in how we undertook work. She was calm, collected and always willing to answer questions.
  • Q. How satisfied were you with the classroom element of the course? A. I am feeling a sense of accomplishment after a successful classroom teaching practice. I also feel more confident and encouraged to finish the online course and start teaching myself, which I haven't felt much before the classroom practice. Having met other students feels great to have a sense of community and being able to exchange knowledge and tips.

  • Q. How satisfied were you with the classroom element of the course? A. As someone that completed the online section of the course already, this allowed me to recap what I’ve learnt as well as some elements of the online section became clearer and I understood it much better than before. It also allowed me to feel much better and not so nervous about teaching certain items such as grammar. The classroom element of the course was really well done, interactive and allowed teaching practice and feedback given not only the good but the bad to. I am glad I decided to pay extra for the combined course option instead of doing the online element only.
  • Q. How satisfied were you with your TEFL Trainer? A. The trainer executed the material perfectly. Very helpful when needed and quite friendly. She put me at ease for when it comes to teaching English. As someone that had completed the online section, it gave me a recap on what I’ve learnt and some elements of the online section which I did not fully understand was covered, she made it so much clearer during the classroom element of the course.

  • Q. How satisfied were you with the classroom element of the course? A. It was informative - I felt I've picked up a lot of hints and tips which may not be in the online units, it had elements of humour (thus making it less formal and not boring), it had a good level of interaction and the facilitator on the day kept good order with regards to the 'class loud-mouth' (there's always one) and dealt with the class 'I-know-more-than-the-teacher' guy very well, with answers to everything that was getting thrown at him! It pushed me out of my comfort zone and gave me useful insight into my own abilities. It was also great to get feedback from the other class members too - it built my confidence. It also gave me insight into what I need to work on in terms of presenting to a class. It was great and exceeded my expectations.
  • Q. How satisfied were you with your TEFL Tutor? A. He was the perfect mix of good-cop, bad-cop! He passed on a lot of useful information regarding his own experiences which was helpful. It's always good to get some useful hints and tips from someone who's 'been there' in the real world, rather than just reading facts from a book.
