English teaching jobs in Germany
Germany offers a wide range of teaching opportunities for ESL and EFL teachers looking to secure a job in one of the most exciting countries in Europe. Jobs can be found at universities and international schools, within the German school system and in commercial language centres.
Teaching positions at universities, international schools and in the school system typically require a valid teaching licence from the teacher’s home country and, as with most of Europe, preference is given to those coming from European Union countries – although there are exceptions depending on which non-EU country you are coming from. For the specifics of the options available to you, teachers should check with the German embassy or consulate in their country for more details.
As one would imagine, competition for TEFL and ESL jobs in Germany is fairly stiff and as a result, it stands to reason that the more qualified you are, the better your chances of finding a job. For the most part, you can consider a degree and TEFL certificate to be the bare minimum requirements – although there are schools that will hire you without a certificate of some kind, but do not count on it. Invest in yourself and at least take an online course – it does not take a lot of time or money and may pay off many times during your ESL career.
Salaries for ESL teachers can vary widely throughout the country but teachers can reasonably expect to earn a comfortable living wage while teaching in Germany. The larger cities can be much more expensive to live in than the smaller centres, and housing is not always provided by employers. However, most schools will offer assistance in helping you to find something suitable to live in, and within your budget. Apartments in the cities are plentiful and you should be able to find a comfortable place to live without much problem.
Hiring takes place year round, but it is important to note that the German school year commences in the latter part of summer, so it is probably wise that you make your plans with a view to working in late summer. Start looking in the spring. You can find jobs online but you will probably stand a better chance than those who simply email résumés to schools if you are on the ground and actively knocking on doors, meeting with prospective employers. It is a wise idea to bring enough money to last you at least two months.
If you decide to teach at a language school, be aware that every school is different. Try to do some research before arriving in Germany on your quest for a TEFL or ESL job. Network – talk to people once you arrive and listen to the buzz of word of mouth – many jobs are found in this manner. And besides, it is comforting to talk to someone who has been through what you are going through, particularly if this is your first foray into the world of TEFL.
