Finding a TEFL job in France

The first thing we need to get out of the way is the issue of work permits. If you are not an EU citizen, it can be difficult to find a job in France as you will need a work permit. US citizens and TEFL teachers from certain other countries may qualify for a work permit, but make sure to find out the specifics with regards to your nationality before making any plans to go to France.

Once you’ve confirmed you’re allowed to work in France, you just need to find a job! To find a TEFL job here you need to not only have a 120-hour TEFL qualification, but also a degree, so don’t expect to find a job without either of these.

In France, the key to finding a TEFL job is to pound the pavements. Not many schools advertise online so it’ll be easier for you to arrive in France and go door-to-door. Treat these meetings like interviews: don’t forget to dress smartly and translate your CV into French.

Teaching English in France

The majority of teaching jobs in France are during the summer. There are loads of positions available at summer camps, so bear this in mind when planning your trip – it can be a good way to get your foot in the door. Business English is also a big market so if this is your thing you should be able to find work in-house in a company. This could well mean you work as a freelancer, which is quite common in France. Private lessons are another avenue to explore, with lessons paying about €20 an hour.

Living in France

You may like the idea of living in a country house surrounded by vineyards, but the truth of the matter is you’ll probably be living where you can find work. Paris, Lyon, Montpellier and Marseilles are the cities to go to if you’re looking for a TEFL job and, to be fair, life in these cities is pretty good. As a TEFL teacher you’ll be earning anywhere from €1,295 to €2,000 which is enough to allow you a comfortable lifestyle. You’ll work between 20 and 25 hours a week so there’s also plenty of time for you to explore this beautiful country and take in the sights.

A word of advice: if you can’t speak French, try to learn a few words before you go. The French have a reputation of not being very receptive of English speakers and it’s not undeserved. Attempting to speak even only a few words will go a long way to endearing you to the French.
